Trio of Hoosiers named to preseason watch lists #iufb

A trio of Hoosier receivers landed on preseason watch lists Wednesday morning.

Simmie Cobbs and Ricky Jones were selected to the Biletnikoff Award Watch List, while Mitchell Paige was named to the Wuerffel Trophy Watch List.

The Biletnikoff Award honors college football’s most outstanding receiver. Any player who catches a pass is eligible for the award. The Wuerffel Trophy goes to the player who best exhibits exemplary community service.

Only one other Big Ten team, Nebraska, and seven other Power Five teams had multiple receivers on the Biletnikoff list.

Last week, Cobbs was named to the Maxwell Award Watch List (player of the year) ahead of his junior season. Last year, Cobbs caught 60 passes for 1,035 yards and four touchdowns. Cobbs was also the sixth Hoosier to post a 1,000-yard season on the way to earning All-Big Ten Honorable Mention honors.

This is the second consecutive season Jones has landed on the Biletnikoff Watch List. Jones, a fifth-year senior, finished with 906 receiving yards and five touchdowns in 2015.

Paige has participated in Read Across America and with the 2nd & 7 Foundation. He has also served as a motivational speaker at Binford Elementary’s After School Program and has volunteered weekly at Highland Park Elementary as a recess monitor.

Wednesday brought the latest round of preseason honors to Indiana, which also landed Griffin Oakes on the Lou Groza Award Watch List (kicker of the year) and guard Dan Feeney on the Outland Trophy Watch List (top interior lineman).

  1. This football team is what coach Wilson has called loaded and this three show one aspect of the talent on this team. Add in our OL and Redding at RB and it is easy to expect an outstanding offense even with a new QB. I think Lagow will show people that he adds to the offense and not detracts from it. Our receivers should step up this year to provide an explosive part to the offense that keeps defenses on their heels.

It isn’t easy to believe a team can win 9 or 10 games in the B1G East when they have struggled to win any games in the conference. I get the feeling though from coach Wilson’s comments he believes this team can win; I hope this is the big season I have been waiting for from IUFB.
