Indiana University freshman football player Jerome Johnson was cited Saturday for illegal possession and consumption of alcohol.

Resident assistant staff at Briscoe Quad found Johnson, 18, passed out in a stairwell and called police at 1:40 a.m. Saturday, according to Lt. Craig Munroe of the Indiana University Police Department.

Munroe said officers called an ambulance after they struggled to receive identification from Johnson. The ambulance took him to IU Health Bloomington Hospital, where he later received his citation, Munroe said.

Johnson’s citation comes after Indiana suspended six players prior to its season opener Thursday at Florida International.

Receiver Simmie Cobbs, safety Chase Dutra, defensive tackle Ralph Green III, cornerbacks Wesley Green and Noel Padmore and defensive back Jake Attar were each suspended, “for not living up to their responsibilities to the program at different times since the conclusion of the 2015 season,” according to a statement released by the program prior to kickoff against FIU.

Wesley Green was suspended indefinitely.

Johnson, a three-star defensive tackle prospect from Mississippi, committed to IU just prior to National Signing Day in February.

The 6-foot-3, 300-pound lineman did not play at FIU.

  1. Alcohol and partying is part of the IU Bloomington campus. The football team has to work hard to get players to understand they have to be careful about when they join in and who they join in with. I hope Jerome gets his life in order and develops into the player he was back in his junior year of high school. He could be a very good DL player but only if he does the right things as a student and football player.

  2. I can’t say I never did that while at IU, but if I passed out, it was on a couch or a bed, but never in a stairwell. A 19 year old male weighing 300 pounds probably has to consume a great deal of alcohol in order to pass out. He’s lucky he did not break his neck or suffer some other type of injury. O.K., hope he’s this year’s sacrificial lamb that will serve as a cautionary tale to all his teammates.

  3. Has anyone 1/2 notion about Wesley Green and the indefinite suspension. Also read where Noel Pademore is in the doghouse for some reason.

  4. Jacob Robinson did pretty much the same thing earlier in the year. Give this kid the same punishment. You don’t know anything about this kid. May be the first time he’s ever drank in his life and things just got carried away or he could be a kid that has a problem. Give him some kind of suspension. If he violates again, then you can look at harsher punishment. This kid is entitled to the same treatment as everyone else. Young and nieve gets you one mulligan.
