Fuchs dislocates ankle, could miss rest of season #iufb

MIAMI — Indiana earned the win it was looking for on Thursday at Florida International.

But it also lost a valuable contributor in the process.

Junior tight end Jordan Fuchs dislocated his ankle and could miss the remainder of the season as he recovers. Fuchs had to be carted off the field after the injury, which happened while Fuchs was assisting with special teams duties.

Although Kevin Wilson called it a significant injury, the IU coach expressed optimism that Fuchs might return later this season. If that’s the case, Wilson said he’ll weigh whether he’ll play Fuchs or have him sit to gain back a year of eligibility.

“That might take some time,” Wilson said. “Potentially, he could get back this season, but he’s got a redshirt year (available). I think it looked a little bit worse (than it is). Hopefully. Other than that, we’re very, very healthy.”

Fuchs caught four passes for 38 yards and two touchdowns in seven games last season. He gives Indiana a nice pass-catching complement to the bigger body of Danny Friend, who made his first start of the season Thursday.

With Coy Cronk starting at left tackle, Brandon Knight also saw time at tight end.

“We still have Ian Thomas, who is doing well but coming off an ankle injury and missed a little bit of time,” Wilson said. “Austin Dorris is back in the mix, as well. When you put Brandon Knight in there, you basically have six O-linemen and Danny Friend weighs 270. When we were in a big personnel (set), we were almost playing with seven offensive linemen. I thought that was good.”

  1. I winced at the site of Fuchs getting rolled up on from behind and it broke my heart to see him getting carted off the field in the first half of the first game of the season. That’s a big loss for IU, but I hope his injury is not as bad as it looks and that he makes a full recovery.

  2. It is a shame to have Fuchs injured so early in the season. It was one of those unfortunate things that just happen during the season.

  3. Ian Thomas is going to have to produce more and sooner than anyone expected. I think I saw him receiving some instruction offered out of discontent from Wilson after the muffed FG attempt. Big opportunity for Austin Dorris to step in for more time.
