IUWBB: Cahill, Buss up for national honors

It was announced Wednesday that Tyra Buss and Amanda Cahill are both up for awards, one for accomplishments on the court and the other for merits off the court.

The Atlanta Tipoff Club announced Buss is on the preseason watch list for the Naismith Trophy, which is given to the national player of the year. Buss is one of 50 players on the watch list and one of nine in the Big Ten conference.

Buss, a junior, was also named to the Big Ten’s preseason all-conference team. She is currently averaging 18.3 points per game and has a team-high 20 steals.

Cahill, another junior, is under consideration for the WBCA Good Works Team, which recognizes athletes’ efforts in their communities. Cahill has a long list of extracurriculars, including time spent with Hoosier HEROES, Indiana’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), IU Best Buddies, Camp Riley, Andrew Luck Change the Play camp, Hoosier Outrun Cancer and the Candy Stripe Crew event.

Cahill is one of 60 players nominated by athletic departments and sports information directors across the country. A team of 20 will be announced in February. On the court, Cahill is averaging 13 points and 7.5 rebounds per game.

  1. A terrific honor for IU and both girls. These types of potential awards or just consideration for these awards are the types of things that continue to boost our program in a positive manner nationally! This is just another indication of the strength of our coaching staff as they have developed this team to become better and better. Go Hoosiers!
