IUWBB: IU defeats UIndy, 87-58, in exhibition play

No. 23 Indiana opened its season with an 87-58 exhibition win over Indianapolis on Sunday.

Sophomore forward Kym Royster led all scorers with 18 points. Tyra Buss added 16.

IU shot out to a 17-0 lead with 6:09 left in the first quarter, fueled by 6-of-6 shooting to start the game. But the Hoosiers cooled considerably, leading 26-18 at the end of the period. Up 39-28 with 4:35 remaining in the second quarter, IU went on a 14-0 run to end the half and lead 53-28.

The third quarter was more worrisome. After turning the ball over five times in the first half, the Hoosiers committed six errors in the third quarter and only outscored the Greyhounds by four points in the second half.

Along with her point total, Royster had eight boards, six on the offensive end. Amanda Cahill and Tyshee Towner, with 10 points apiece, and Karlee McBride, with 11, finished in double figures for the Hoosiers.

  1. This was a typical exhibition game that had it’s ups and downs. I had made the statement last year on more than one occasion that Kym Royster would be a terrific player with her athleticism if she would put on about 15 or 20 pounds of muscle in the off season to gain strength. Well, it appears that is the case as she finished several inside moves while being fouled. Her added strength will go a long way for us this year. Her help at the top of the circle on the hedge was really terrific to see. She was also the leading rebounder tonight. Buss was her typical self and Cahill was also her steady self. McBride hit a couple of 3’s as she normally does and transfers Amber Dean and Tia Elbert showed their quickness and ability to play strong defense. Dean looked a little tentative offensively which is to be expected for her first game with a new team. Trust me, she is really explosive offensively. As far as the 3 freshmen, I was very impressed with Ria Gulley which coach Moren has stated is their best athlete. She handled the ball well, hit a 3 and played very good defense. Darby Foresman will be a good back up in the post position, her size and ability to run the floor will be a huge positive. Bri Wickware showed very good quickness from the wing position. She is very quick for her size and runs the floor really well. This team is much more athletic than it was last year with the addition of the 3 freshmen and transfers Amber Deane and Tia Elbert. Our depth is going to be a huge for us this year after having a short bench last year. All in all it was a good start for the Hoosiers.

  2. Mike- You and I both had the same feeling about Royster last year and said as much and she hasnt let us down. I was a bit surprised to see her get the start today. Moren has made it plain that excellent work and consistancy in practice will be rewarded. Amber Deane will also be fine once she gets used to playing with the team and gets a few games under her belt, not worried about her at all. I would like to see more people at the home games. This team deserves the backing and Im sure it hurts them a little not to get it so far.
