IUWBB: Hoosiers fall to NC State, 84-70

Indiana dropped another road game Thursday in an 84-70 loss to North Carolina State.

But the Hoosiers receive one spectacular performance from junior guard Tyra Buss, who posted a career-high 38 points. That is the fourth-best scoring performance in program history.

The Hoosiers (4-3) have now lost their last three games on the road, including defeats to Western Kentucky and Auburn. This loss, however, was much different from the one to Auburn, where IU blew a 17-point, fourth-quarter lead.

Trailing 60-41 in the third quarter, the Hoosiers went on a 15-0 run to cut NC State’s lead to 60-56 with 7:12 left in the final period. Buss, who finished 10-of-14 from the field and 14-of-15 from the free throw line, hit two freebies to pull IU within three, 61-58, with 6:03 remaining.

But the Hoosiers couldn’t sustain enough offense to close on the Wolfpack. The home team was led by Dominique Wilson’s 23 point. Jennifer Mathurin scored 19, and Miah Spencer finished with 17.

  1. I listened to this game last night and it sounded like we simply didn’t show up in the first half trailing by 46-28 at the half. We shot 32% from the floor in the first half. While there was a ray of light in the second half when we cut the lead to 3 points, we simply couldn’t sustain our momentum. We have had a problem the last 2 games with turnovers with Auburn scoring 33 points off of our 20 and North Carolina St. scoring 15 points off of 17 turnovers. If we are going to be the team we want to be, this problem must be taken care of! Getting out rebounded 41-30 last night only added to our problems. Although Tyra Buss had a huge game last night, her having to play 39 minutes in each of our last 2 games can’t be helpful. It’s amazing that Buss scored 38 points last night while only taking 14 shots yet hit 14 of 15 free throws. Of course she actually took more than 14 shots because when you are fouled and don’t hit the shot, the attempt doesn’t count in the stats. Amanda Cahill must get more than 5 attempts from the floor against Auburn and 6 attempts from the floor against North Carolina St. She needs to be a little more aggressive offensively for us to be successful. Of her 6 shots, 4 were from beyond the 3 point line, we need to get her more shots inside the lane. Only 2 players in double figures last night with Buss and Gassion. Only 8 points off the bench last night which also contributed to our defeat. One thing that was a little disturbing, IU was called for 25 fouls to 14 for NC St. State had 35 free throw attempts as opposed to 21 for IU. I normally don’t cry about officials but, just sayin…. We need to win at North Texas Tuesday if for no other reason to prove to ourselves that we can win on the road. Go Hoosiers!

    1. Steve w your posts are spot on . We need for coach moren to develop some of her recruits before conference play . We definitely have chemistry issues and several girls seem out of shape . Time is now to address these problems .

  2. This road trip seems to be a really difficult challenge for the new players and players maybe playing a different role or position to gel. T. Buss needs some help. Glad to see T. Buss score and overall play well. Royster, hopefully can be better. Where are the rest of the gaurds?

  3. “after the bitter disappointment of auburn and energy we have shown in today’s practice I think we will be ready” Moren. For me I could hardly watch the first half if it wasnt for Buss. This wasnt the Auburn defense yet we displayed the same mistakes and turnovers we had in that game seemed to be a huge carryover from that game for everyone except Buss. Buss played her heart out and tried to carry the team but could not . The rest of the team did not play up to their potential. Mcbride cant hit the broad side of barn, Royster playing like crap, truly thought she would have banner year. We need a strong post presence and we are not getting it. I Thought Wickware had some nice minutes for us. Im surprised that Moren didnt just pull the whole starting lineup aside from Buss and go with them, the starters were playing that bad it couldnt have hurt. Congrats to Buss on her 38 pts fourth highest output in school history.

  4. I agree with Steve W … it was hard to watch the first half last night. We did battle back and made a game of it in the third and early fourth. For the most part NC State’s superior athleticism was on full display. They pulled down 14 offense rebounds and had too many easy buckets. They were quicker and some of our players just do not have the foot speed to guard really athletic players one on one effectively. A lot of our turnovers were really due to sloppy play. No team is going to win many games having 17 turnovers and giving up 14 offensive boards … essentially 31 additional possessions for their opponent. Tyra was outstanding on both ends of the court. Alexis had to work extremely hard on the defensive end and did a super job.
Going forward this team needs a road win in Texas next game and then come back to The Hall for some home cooking and get energized.
It is only December 2 so there is plenty of time to correct things before Big Ten play begins. Go Hoosiers!!

  5. I suppose we have to be realistic. Last year we over-achieved and had some luck . This year we have to have more than luck to excel. Teams are starting to shutdown the paint knowing this is where we like to go , and when the 3 is not going down we’re in trouble. Also we are not able to block out well enough allowing opponents to get O rebounds. When we go to the bench they have to provide. Wickware did ok on her minutes and I would like to see more minutes from Darby. The coaches may think she is not ready , but give her a chance , dont put her in for 30 sec. and then back out. Some of these things will need to change , we cannot depend on the 3 to keep us in games. The chemistry we had last year seems missing. The new pieces are not quite jelling as Moren had hoped. Hopefully it will come together later on. Gp Hoosiers!

  6. Steve, I pretty much agree with everything you say, especially the lack of playing time for Darby. Royster has been very inconsistent so far which really surprises me. I really thought that her added strength and terrific athleticism would stand out but, not yet. Darby has very good athleticism for her size and has a good perimeter shot. I really feel that she is very comparable to Cahill.
As to your point Steve, of other teams shutting down our inside game, Only Buss is at this time helping our perimeter game. We really miss McBride’s outside shooting since she is in a terrible shooting slump. Last year she was dynamite from the outside but, has not produced this year. She is 9 for 43 from the floor including 8 for 29 from 3. One other thing, turnovers are killing us, we need to clean that up to be more competitive. Go Hoosiers!
