IUWBB: Indiana beats Valparaiso, 87-58

Indiana beat Valparaiso on Sunday, 87-58.

Alexis Gassion led the Hoosiers with 19 points. Amanda Cahill, with 16 points and 11 rebounds, Tyra Buss, with 12 points, and Tia Elbert, with 10, also finished in double figures.

Indiana feasted on Valparaiso’s zone defense with mid-range jumpers in the first half, specifically ones just outside the paint, near the baseline. Alexis Gassion thrived in that area the most, producing 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting through two quarters.

IU went on two separate 7-0 runs in the first quarter to establish an 18-6 advantage, and came out of the first quarter up 22-9. The Hoosiers pushed the lead to 42-22 by halftime. One big difference was turnovers. IU had 12 assists to three turnovers, while Valparaiso turned it over 13 times. The Hoosiers outscored Valparaiso 17-0 on turnovers in the first half.

IU led 78-48 after three quarters. That advantage was 25-2 through three quarters, but when the bench came in during the fourth quarter, that advantage ended up being 25-20.

  1. Valparaiso is a much better opponent than we saw this past Thursday but, the Hoosiers put them to bed early. They held Valpo to 38% from the floor and the IU defense caused 19 turnovers. This would have been a better result if IU would not have turned the ball over 9 times in the 4th quarter leading to several Valpo points. IU the first 3 quarters had only 4 turnovers. Alexa Gassion had a terrific game with 19 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists with no turnovers. Amanda Cahill had another double-double with 16 points and 3 steals. Tyra Buss had 12 points, 6 assists and 3 steals. It was great to see Tia Elbert score 10 points on 5 for 5 shooting from the field and pass out 4 assists. All in all it was a much better effort than Thursday evening. Amanda Cahill is 52 points shy of 1,000 and when she reaches that goal will join Buss and Gassion to become the 3rd player to do that this year. Go Hoosiers!!

  2. Seeing the way the bench players were being subbed in so freely early and often it was as if Moren read and took to heart one of my posts. All kidding aside I loved to see that . The more subs that can get minutes now against lesser teams could and should payoff in the long run when they are really needed. She is learning now who she will able to trust down the road. Moren was happy with the first 3 qtrs but not so much with the final quarter,, still plenty of work to do.
