IUWBB: IU beats North Texas, 94-64

Indiana snapped a three-game road losing streak with a 94-64 win at North Texas on Tuesday.

Tyra Buss led the Hoosiers (5-3) with 21 points. Amanda Cahill finished with a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds. Alexis Gassion, with 15 points, and Kym Royster, 13, also finished in double figures.

IU shot 64 percent from the field, which ranks as the fourth-best shooting performance in school history. That included a 6-of-14 performance from 3-point range.

The Hoosiers jumped out to a 13-0 lead nearly midway through the first quarter. North Texas (2-6) fell behind 20-6 before going on a 9-0 run to end the first period. But IU then outscored the Mean Green 29-7 in the second quarter to take a commanding 49-22 lead into halftime.

Along with their shooting touch, the Hoosiers also dominated North Texas on the glass. They outrebounded the home team, 44-15.

This was also a return home, of sorts, for three Hoosiers who hail from the state of Texas. Freshman Bre Wickware, a native of Denton, Texas, registered five points and five rebounds in 14 minutes of play. Fellow freshman Ria Gulley, from San Antonio, finished with eight points in 19 minutes. Danielle Williams, a sophomore from Fort Worth, played for two minutes but did not take a shot.

  1. Yes, this was a good thing that we finally win a road game and it was by a huge margin and we shot the ball extremely well. But, I am really discouraged by our 28 turnovers in this game, we are entirely to careless with the ball. Thank God we were playing a very poor team. If we are going to be any kind of contender in the conference race, it is imperative that we get a handle on this issue, no pun intended! Turnovers have been one of our main nemeses in our road defeats. At this time we are obviously not a mentally strong team, this is obvious by our lack of concentration when running our offense. This must improve drastically! It will be good to see our girls returning home Thursday.

  2. One other thing, I see that Darby only played 3 minutes but, in her time on the floor grabbed 4 rebounds. Just sayin…

  3. Great to get a road win but ……. 28 turnovers, mostly unforced, against that team? There won’t be many Big Ten wins if we don’t start putting value on each possession and stop these careless and boneheaded turnovers.

  4. Bad road trip. Only positives 1. Road games 2. One win over a not good team Negatives 1. Blew 17 point lead with player like Buss playing guard 2. Where is the help 3. Position changes and transfer newcomers are not moving as cohesive team 4. Need more from Darby…However, it seems home court makes a huge difference in ladies basketball

  5. Congrats the ladies for finally winning on this road swing, but I agree with others that this turnover issue is a big problem, simply not taking a great value of the ball, it has to be fixed. Coaches were glad to get the win but had to be quite disappointed on the TO . Darby could do more if she got more minutes . 3 min. a laugher . But she did get 4 reb. great for her. You finally get a player with some size and what do you let her ride the bench, real smart coaches. When you have nearly 30 TO in a weaker team that shouldnt have scored above 50,, lots of work to do with big ten play not far off.
