IUWBB: Hoosiers beat Wisconsin, 78-54

Indiana shut down Wisconsin in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s 78-54 win at the Kohl Center.

The Hoosiers (15-6, 5-3 Big Ten) led by six points heading into the final period, but outscored the home team 21-3 in the final 10 minutes of play. That effort helped claimed IU’s first win at the Kohl Center since 2009 on Sunday with a 78-54 win over Wisconsin. It was also IU coach Teri Moren’s 250th career win.

Junior point guard Tyra Buss led the Hoosiers with 19 points, senior guard Alexis Gassion scored 16 and senior forward Jenn Anderson produced 14. Junior forward Amanda Cahill nearly came away with a double-double, finishing with 11 points and nine rebounds.

Though the Hoosiers did not shoot well from beyond the arc versus Wisconsin’s 2-3 zone, they did get to the free throw line. IU drew 27 fouls and hit 23-of-31 from the line. From 3-point range, the Hoosiers hit 3-of-17.

Wisconsin (5-16, 0-8 B1G) only got to the line eight times and hit four.

  1. IU pulled away in the 4th quarter after leading by only 6 at the end of 3 quarters. We outscored Wisconsin 21-3 in the 4th. Any win on the road is a good win! One cause for concern has been our 3 point shooting the last 2 games; we were 2 for 15 against Penn St. and 3 for 17 today. What has really helped us is our getting to the free throw line the last 2 games. We were 28 for 32 against Penn st. and 23 for 31 today. Tyra Buss scored 19 points, passed out 3 assists and had 4 steals. Amanda Cahill was 1 rebound from a double- double with 11 points and 9 rebounds. Alexis Gassion had 16 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists. Jenn Anderson had her 5th straight game in double figures with 14 points and 5 rebounds. We scored 20 points off their 12 turnovers.
One thing that really bothers me in accordance to our home attendance, we are averaging a little above 2,500 a game and yet Wisconsin which is 0-8 in the conference had 4,430 for this game? People say that you need to win to draw people into your place. Well, we have lost 1 home game in 2 years and we can’t get people to come watch this team play, makes no since? Go Hoosiers!!

  2. I dont get the low attendance either. Perhaps it the long time tradition of womens basketball being down. I have no idea what it will take to get people to follow the women. The 3 pt shooting will come around in time.

Also you might have noticed in the latest bracketology 6 days ago that IU is not in it.

  3. Steve, I did notice the bracketology last week. At this time we are I think in a 3 way tie for 4th in the conference at 5-3. We are tied with Northwestern and Purdue. We hold the tie breaker with Purdue by beating them. There are currently 5 Big 10 teams in the bracketology. It seems that we need to finish in the top 5 in the conference to get in? We have home games coming up with Michigan which is currently in 4th place and Northwestern. I believe we will lose our home game against Maryland but, will win the rest at home. At Michigan St. this Thursday will be tough. We need to beat Rutgers, Nebraska and Illinois on the road. If we can do that, I think we are in? It would be great to stael a win at Michigan St. Go Hoosiers!

  4. Mike– Yes it appears that only 5 teams from the B1G will be taken. Thats why the Mich St. is so important for us , we must steal that game with Maryland waiting in the wings. If not that puts us back to 500 at 5-5. Personally I feel that IU came out flat against both Penn St and Wis. In fact for 3 qtrs Wis was highly upset minded we were lucky to pull out both of those games. I look for us to come out playing well early against Mich St, at least I hope so. Maryland is another animal, lots of weapons. Nobody can seem to handle Jones inside and I think she is the key. Can we keep her contained, can we block her out, most teams cant and if we cant we will lose. Correct me if Im wrong but to my knowledge the terps have not lost to a conf. opponent since being in the league.

  5. T. Constantly amused at how you rip the men’s team and compare them to the women . Coach creen lost 2 very significant players to graduation . Now 3 starters may be lost for the season . Another has been hurt on and off . The women’s team graduated no one and has lost no one to injury . How many games would the women win if buss Cahill and lex were lost for the season and Jenn played on and off ? none .! Great prediction t ! Props to coach mo ren for not allowing anyone to graduate or get hurt .

  6. T.Moren is a great coach for Tyra, Amanda, and Lex. They are so much better complete players with her coaching them. They are lucky to have such a great coach.

  7. A big congrats to Tyra Buss for getting B1G player of the week award. Also if you happened to watch the mich st at minn. last night you also know that Christy Winters Scott Placed Tyra on her top 5 all defensive team. Well-deserved, Tyra!!

    1. Typical. Lex is the best defender on our team by far. Always guarding the other team’s best offensive player. Tyra Is maybe the 4th or 5th best defender on our team. She usually guards the weakest. Tyra is good at playing passing lanes and getting Steals, not guarding a good offensive player. On another note T what in the world are you talking about. You make no sense.

  8. Tough game coming up tonight at the Breslin center, could go either depending on how we play and how we defend Jankoska. On Royster , against Purdue she was agressive and had a season high but nothing since. Moren’s own words ” we need her to show back up”. That is the flaw with Royster inconsistent play been that way for 1 1/2 seasons. She can make the difference when she does play well, but her team needs that more often.

  9. IU ladies do not look good tonight and MSU takes advantage of opportunities both, offensively and defensively.
