Jake Matheny made a strong first impression with his new team.
The Indiana catcher earned the Big Ten’s Freshman of the Week award after a powerful weekend at the plate. Matheny, the son of St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny, hit a pair of two-run homers to help the Hoosiers to a 12-3 win over Gonzaga on Friday. His first home run came in his first college at-bat, while his second made him the first IU freshman to homer twice in one game since Isaiah Pasteur did so in March 2015.
Matheny added an RBI double against the Bulldogs in Indiana’s 5-1 win on Sunday, finishing the week with an OPS of 1.929, three hits in his first seven at-bats and five RBIs.
Matheny went 0-for-4 in Monday’s 4-1 loss to Oregon State. The Hoosiers (2-2) return to action Friday with a three-game series at Florida Atlantic.
