LOUISVILLE — A pair of Indiana University men’s basketball recruits combined for 25 points to help lead the Lightning to a 122-109 win over the Thunder in the Derby Festival Classic Saturday night at Freedom Hall.
Justin Smith, a 6-foot-7 forward from Lincolnshire, Ill., scored 15 points to go with four rebounds three assists and three turnovers in 20 minutes. He also finished as the runner-up in the slam dunk contest, which was completed at halftime of the annual high school all-star game.
Smith finished with 49 points on his two dunks, earning a perfect score on the second attempt when he took a pass off the side of the backboard from future IU teammate Al Durham Jr. and rammed home the reverse jam.
Texas A&M-bound Savion Flagg also got a perfect score on his second dunk to edge Smith, 50-49.
Durham, a 6-4 guard from Lilburn, Ga., finished with 10 points on 5-of-11 shooting. He added six rebounds, three assists and no turnovers. One of those assists was a highlight reel alley-oop to Smith in the first half, as the Lightning built a 58-55 halftime lead and slowly expanded the advantage over the final 20 minutes.
Kentucky recruit Shai Gilgeous-Alexander won MVP honors for the victors with a game-high 29 points, nine rebound and six assists. Western Kentucky-bound Taveion Hollingsworth had 18 points and seven rebounds to take MVP honors for the losing Thunder squad.
