IUWBB: Gassion signs with pro team in Finland

Former Hoosiers guard Alexis Gassion has signed a professional contract with Kouvottaret of Finland’s Korisliga league.

Gassion, a 5-foot-11 guard, was named to the Big Ten’s all-defensive team as a senior. She averaged 12.4 points, 6.4 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game in 2016-17.

The news of Gassion’s contract was first confirmed by Tom Oktavec, Gassion’s stepfather. IU later published a news release on her signing overseas.

““I am extremely excited to continue my professional career overseas in Finland,” Gassion said in a statement released by IU. “I would like to thank my family and coaches who have gotten me to this point and can’t wait to experience a new level of competition.”

Gassion signed her contract with Kouvottaret on Monday, Oktavec said, and she is scheduled to join her team in September. Kouvottaret is located in Kouvola, Finland, in the southern part of the country, about 86 miles northeast of Helsinki.

The league’s season typically begins in early October. Last season, Kouvottaret finished sixth out of 10 teams in its division with a 12-13 record.

Gassion joins a shortlist of Hoosiers overseas. Aulani Sinclair, who graduated in 2013, has recently played in Hungary and Spain. Linda Rubene, who played at IU from 2011-13, has competed professionally in Spain and Latvia.

“We want to congratulate Alexis on continuing her basketball career overseas,” IU coach Teri Moren said in a statement. “She has worked extremely hard especially in the last season to elevate her game and is being rewarded for her accomplishments. We want her to know that her Hoosier family is rooting for her every step of the way.”

  1. Good for Alexis, this is great news that she will be able to play the game she loves and make money doing it! What more could she want, it’s great to know that all of those hours in the drive way and in the gym have paid off. Good luck Alexis!

  2. Always an athletic gamer who seemed to always have a positive attitude as displayed by her play on the court that allowed her to get the most out of her abilities while being a good team player. A favorite of mine.
