Athlon names Scales a preseason All-American

Tegray Scales ended his junior season as an All-American, and he’ll begin his senior season as one, too.

Athon Sports named Scales to its preseason All-America second team on Tuesday, adding to the senior linebacker’s list of preseason honors.

In 2016, Scales became the first Indiana linebacker since Van Waiters in 1987 to receive All-America honors when named him to its second team. Scales, who led the nation with 23.5 tackles for loss and 93 solo stops, also picked up second team All-Big Ten honors from the league’s media.

Scales was also recently named to the 2017 Lott IMPACT Trophy Watch List. He enters the season ninth on IU’s career list with 33.5 tackles for loss.

Scales, along with four teammates, also picked up All-Big Ten preseason honors from Athlon. He and cornerback Rashard Fant were named Athlon’s All-Big Ten first team defense. Receiver Nick Westbrook received all-conference first team offensive honors.

Left tackle Coy Cronk was recognized with Athlon’s All-Big Ten third team honors and hybrid safety Marcelino Ball picked up third team defensive honors.

  1. This is good publicity for Scales and IU but I hope the defense really improves again this year and Scales ends up as a first team All-American. I hope the defense can achieve thier goal of becoming a top 25 defense in 2017.
