IU reveals teams included in Hoosier Tip-off Classic

Archie Miller’s first non-conference schedule at Indiana is taking shape.

IU announced Monday that it has lined up four teams to play in the 2017 Hoosier Tip-off Classic at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. The Hoosiers will host Howard (Nov. 12), South Florida (Nov. 19), Arkansas State (Nov. 22) and Eastern Michigan (Nov. 24).

Arkansas State finished at No. 124 in the final ratings at KenPom.com, while Eastern Michigan finished at No. 148. Meanwhile, South Florida finished at No. 292 and Howard finished at No. 338.

“When it comes to giving teams the opportunity to play in Assembly Hall, everybody that we bring in here has to have great purpose, whether that’s a national opponent or a game we’re preparing to play a specific style of a team coming from a different league that we’ll see later down the road,” Miller said in a statement.

Indiana will play 31 regular season games during the 2017-18 season, which will feature a jumbled schedule due to the Big Ten Tournament being staged a week earlier than normal so that it can be played at Madison Square Garden.

Two conference games will be played during the first week of December, an early-season taste of league play that will follow IU’s ACC/Big Ten matchup with Duke on Nov. 29.

Although IU’s full schedule is not expected to be released until early September, a few other non-conference opponents are known at this time.

IU has a pair of tough road trips on the docket, including a Nov. 15 date at Seton Hall as part of the Gavitt Tipoff Games and a Dec. 9 trip to Louisville. The Hoosiers will also face Notre Dame in Indianapolis on Dec. 16 as part of this year’s Crossroads Classic.

“As we look toward the future, we want to put ourselves on a marquis stage as much as you can, but also schedule with great intelligence to fit all of our needs that put us in the best possible position for postseason play,” Miller said.
