Lagow named to Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award watch list

Richard Lagow has a spot on the 2017 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award watch list.

Indiana’s fifth-year senior quarterback was an honorable mention All-Big Ten selection and IU’s Offensive Newcomer of the Year in 2016, finishing second in the Big Ten in passing yards per game (258.6) and third in yards per completion (13.3) and completions (19.4).

The Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award recognizes the nation’s top quarterback for his accomplishments both on and off the field. Candidates must be a college senior or fourth-year junior on schedule to graduate with their class.

Lagow is one of 47 quarterbacks added to the watch list Wednesday. He’s also one of seven from the Big Ten, joining Ohio State’s J.T. Barrett, Purdue’s David Blough, Nebraska’s Tanner Lee, Penn State’s Trace McSorley, Michigan’s Wilton Speight and Northwestern’s Clayton Thorson.

Lagow, who transferred to IU from Cisco (Texas) Community College, had an up and down first season with the Hoosiers. He demonstrated his potential as a high-level passer with three, three-touchdown games and set the Indiana single-game mark with 496 yards and three scores against Wake Forest. In that same game, Lagow also threw five interceptions. Lagow threw 17 interceptions last season — the second-most in the conference.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award. A list of 15 finalists will be announced in September and a winner will be revealed on Friday, Dec. 8.

  1. This has been the biggest number of IU players on awards watch list in a long time. H4H, coach Allen has had a lot of fans say they used to only come to BB games but are now coming to football games too. He is having the same impact that coach Mallory and coach Hep had on attendance. With the home schedule this year and if the team plays up to their goals then attendance will improve quite a bit.

Looking at our younger players and recruits that say they are coming to IU, IU should have more on the watch list the next few years.

  2. It was just an easy opening, v13. For many, many decades…IU Football was best left on a ‘no watch’ list.

  3. Are these secondary or primary watch lists? If they are primary watch lists teams like Ohio State, Mich, Alabama etc. must have their whole first string offense and first string defense on a watch list. They may even have some second stringers on a watch list. If they don’t it is because players playing in front of them or they would be.
