Lillard named to MAC Hermann Trophy watch list #iums

The 2017 MAC Hermann Trophy watch list was released on Tuesday, and Indiana University senior Grant Lillard was among the 31 players named as a candidate for college soccer’s most prestigious individual award.

This is the second straight season Lillard has been named to the watch list. The 6-foot-4 center back earned second team All-America honors from both College Soccer News and Top Drawer Soccer last year, while being named first team All-Big Ten and All-Region. Lillard started all 18 matches in which he appeared for the Hoosiers, helping the IU defense post a 0.70 goals against average and post a Big Ten-best 11 shutouts.

“Grant is among the elite in college soccer,” head coach Todd Yeagley remarked. “Over his last three years he has continued to develop in all aspects of the game. Grant is on track to be one of our all-time best central defenders here at IU. We anticipate a great senior year for Grant and he very worthy of this preseason honor.”

The Hinsdale, Ill. native is bidding to join an exclusive list of 11 previous Hoosiers to earn national player of the year honors, including Yeagley and associate head coach Brian Maisonneuve.

The MAC Hermann Trophy will announce a list of 15 semifinalists near the end of the college soccer season based on voting by NCAA Divison I head coaches, with three finalists ultimately placed on the ballot. The winner will be announced on Jan. 5, 2018 at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis.
