Matheny transfers out of Indiana

Catcher Jake Matheny has transferred from Indiana, a program spokesperson confirmed Thursday.

Matheny, the son of St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny, appeared in 32 games for the Hoosiers as a freshman in 2017, including 26 starts. Matheny and his brother, Luke, formerly of Oklahoma State, will transfer to San Jacinto College in Texas.

He batted .247 and drove in 15 runs during his one season with the program, most memorably earning Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors in February after hitting two, two-run home runs against Gonzaga in his first career game.

Starting catcher Ryan Fineman will return for his junior season next spring.
