Notebook: Stringer won’t play, IU names game captains

Injuries have taken a toll on redshirt sophomore Omari Stringer.

IU coach Tom Allen announced Friday that Stringer will not play this season after appearing in eight games last fall. The IU defensive end made two tackles, including one for loss in his college debut at Florida International in 2016.

Stringer will remain with the program as a student assistant. Allen did not specify the injuries that have plagued Stringer.

“Omari Stringer is a young man that just physically had lots of challenges,” Allen said. “He will remain with us and help us, but won’t be playing this fall, just because his body is not able to do so.”

IU names game captains
Ahead of Thursday’s matchup against Ohio State, Indiana has settled on its four game captains for the season opener.

Quarterback Richard Lagow and left guard Wes Martin have been designated as offensive captains, while linebacker Tegray Scales and defensive end Greg Gooch have been designated as defensive captains.

Allen says captains could change on a weekly basis.

“Those four young men will be our game day captains for Ohio State, and we’ll start the trend,” he said.

  1. There are a couple of surprises in the depth chart – Watercutter as #2 TE, Caleb Jones #2 behind Cronk. Based on reports out of Fall Practices I am not surprised by Hale being ahead of Westbrook but 1s nd 2s will all play a lot at the pace the offense will go.

  2. Best depth at 2 deep I’ve ever seen at IU. Thanks to Coaches Wilson, Allen and all assistants of the last 4-5 years for accomplishing an achievement never before attained at IU. The fact they are still building the 2 deep with a couple of young guys proves recruiting has not leveled off but is still on the incline.

  3. How much will special team play change considering only a minimum of changes involved, per the depth chart. . The punter (Haydon Whitehead – which is Tom Allen scholarship recruit), Holder (Drew Conrad – also a punter) and the PR (J-Shun Harris – was not available last year). We the fan will get to see first hand how much improvements happen with the special teams after one year.
