2-star defensive tackle Shamar Jones commits to IU

Another defensive lineman has joined Indiana’s 2018 recruiting class.

Two-star defensive tackle Shamar Jones announced his verbal commitment to IU on Friday evening, giving the Hoosiers their fourth defensive lineman in the current recruiting cycle.

Indiana is the only Big Ten school to offer the Johnstown, Pa. native, who has accumulated a list of Mid-American Conference offers along with one from Wake Forest. According to the 247 Sports Composite, Jones is the No. 153 defensive tackle in the 2018 class and the No. 52 overall prospect from his home state.

As a junior last season, Jones made 98 tackles, including 19 for loss and 6.5 sacks.

The 6-foot-1, 271-pound high school senior told the Johnstown Tribune-Democrat before his game Friday that Bloomington felt like the right fit for him.

“When I was at Indiana it felt like home,” Jones told his local paper. “It felt good. Everything was good. I loved the coaches. It was just a good experience. I loved the atmosphere.”

Jones joins three-star Miami defensive end, three-star Hamilton Southeastern defensive end Madison Norris and Chicago defensive end Gavin McCabe in Indiana’s 2018 recruiting class, which was ranked No. 10 in the Big Ten by 247 Sports prior to Jones’ commitment.

The database ranking had not been updated by publication time.

  1. This kid can really play. He’s a 4 star talent stuck in a short, stubby 2 star body. What he lacks in size and bulk he makes up for with explosiveness and speed. He’s going to be able to get into the backfield and disrupt plays. Real nice get.

  2. Definitely a classic tweener cuz i see him lined up on the outside put him in at the 3 technique and tell him to gain 20 pounds and hope he can hold up i guess

  3. Mike- I think you missed a name in your last paragraph summary of 2018 defensive lineman recruits.

“Jones joins three-star Miami defensive end..(?)”

  4. Watching Jones play he is a 4 star talent and I think that is what coach Hagen sees. IU has size in the young DL so Jones being a tweener will fit in fine. He will get stronger and a bit bigger over the next two years, add that to his desire and I see a very good DLman for IU.

Besides James Head his teammate Charlton is in Bloomington today and expected to commit to IU soon.

  5. Gotta love the optimism you guys express, but there’s a reason why no other Power-Five Conference team, except Wake Forest, has offered this kid a scholarship. Hope you guys are right, and he can develop into a Big Ten player, but he’s going to need 25 more pounds while maintaining that quickness before he’ll be able to play in a Big Ten game. Looks like a project to me.

I want to see IU beating out Power-Five Conference programs for 3-star and a few 4-star rated players. But given that IU can’t fill Memorial Stadium playing against MI, for Homecoming, on a beautiful fall day, I can understand why recruiting better talent will continue to be such an uphill climb for our coaches.

    1. Gotta love the relentless cynicism. Are you sure you didn’t graduate from Purdue? Maybe in a year before facemasks? IU already has a 4 star recruit and several nearly 4 star recruits. They are trending for their highest or second highest rated recruited class ever. Bummer.

  6. PO, I am sure he will gain weight but don’t forget Dwight Feeney played NFL football at this kid’s size. I am not saying he has the same talent but if he has the drive he shows on the field he could be a surprise player. It is players like this and Norris that are under sized that IU has to be right on. If they become productive players then IU has stolen a couple of very good players. The RB from VA committed to IU is a 4 star that is rated #8 in the country.

  7. IU has to have this kid. Watch his tape. His size will only increase like Mike Barwick. As I stated in another thread even if he doesn’t become a stud who the hell would want to face this guy across the line in practice everyday.
