IUWBB: Buss named to Wade, Naismith watch lists

Indiana senior guard Tyra Buss was named Wednesday to watch lists for two national player of the year awards.

Buss, who has scored 22.7 points per game this season, is in contention for the Wade and Naismith trophies. There were 25 players selected for the Wade watch list, as well as 50 on the Naismith list.

Buss was a first-team All-Big Ten selection as a sophomore and junior. She was a WBCA honorable mention All-American last season, as well.

Buss averaged 18.4 points, 4.7 assists and 2.4 steals per game in 2016-17. She was the first player in program history to score 600 or more points in back-to-back seasons and the fastest player in school history to reach 1,000 career points.

Buss currently has 1,737 career points. The program record is held by Denise Jackson (1,917).

Prior to Buss’ addition to the Wade Trophy’s watch list in ’16-17, the last Hoosier to receive consideration was Jackson in 1983 and ’84.

  1. Barring injury, Buss will break a few IU career records. She will become the career scoring leader, she may break the career assist record and possibly the steals record. Her being added to these two watch lists is a great honor for her and IU. Her and Amanda Cahill coming to IU has elevated our program to a level that has not been seen in years. Tyra’s competitive desire to excel at her craft has been a pleasure to watch over the last 4 years. I only hope and pray that Tyra and Amanda’s health hold up through the year so we will not be robbed of seeing these 2 girls complete their careers. Go IU!

  2. Any awards or potential awards are all deserved for Tyra Buss. Lets just hope the injury bug does not hit anyone let alone the seniors. It was a shame that Cahill fouled out of the St Marys game with 7min. remaining as it could have turned out differently . Road games call always be iffy concerning the officials.

  3. Tyra, sure has made a mark @ IU. Thus far, I can’t imagine things working out any better for her than what they have @ IU. Match made in heaven between Tyra, Amanda, rest of team, and especially T.Moren. Over the last 4 years IU ladies basketball is at an all time high.
