IUWBB: Indiana defeats Arkansas State 93-51

Indiana pulled out a 93-51 win over Arkansas State in Saturday’s opener at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.

Senior Tyra Buss led the Hoosiers (1-0) with 28 points and 11 assists. Senior Amanda Cahill, with 13 points, also scored in double figures. Freshmen Bendu Yeaney and Keyanna Warthen scored 11 points apiece, and junior Kym Royster finished with 10 points.

Buss’ 11 assists were a career high.

The Hoosiers established a 30-14 lead after one period, limiting their turnovers to one and hitting 13-of-16 from the free throw line. Buss hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer, bouncing off the rim and in, to send IU into the second period with momentum.

Buss had another quarter-ending play in the second quarter, putting in a runner to give the Hoosiers’ a 56-26 advantage at halftime. She had 23 points at half, including 9-of-10 at the free throw line.

The only negative in the first half was rebounding. Eight of Arkansas State’s 14 points in the first quarter came on second-chance buckets. After six offensive boards in the first quarter, the Hoosiers limited the Red Wolves to one in the second period.

IU continued to pour it on in the third quarter, hitting 4-of-4 from 3-point range. Those triples came from Cahill (two), sophomore Bre Wickware and freshman Bendu Yeaney.  The lead grew to 79-37 after three.

  1. Great to see IU win with such a dominating performance. We need to for Penn and Yeaney to cut down on the fouling and stay on the court longer. We should be able to handle Southern U. in basically the same way.
Its the Western Ky. game , 3rd game on the schedule which is cause for concern. I remember they beat us by 11 pts last year and Yesterday they upset #16 Missouri. We better be ready for that one. Go Hoosiers!

  2. Very good performance tonight by the girls. First of all, 5 girls wound up in double figures and another girl was 1 point away from being 6. While Buss and Cahill both had double-doubles, Deanna Warthan had a terrific game also with 11 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists. IU held Arkansas St. to 34% shooting from the field. State also had 20 tournovers which led to over 20 points scored for the Hoosiers. IU had 22 assists which is outstanding. Arkansas St. has 3 really good players but, IU had many more. IU’ s freshmen were very impressive tonight. Their quickness and athletic ability made a huge difference against a team that had some good athletes. Here again as I mentioned in my last post, this is a fun team to watch. Go Hoosiers!!

  3. Nice opening game for the ladies. Kym Royster played a very solid game inside and Bre Wickware looked really comfortable and under control. The freshman showed glimpses of their potential and overall did a good job for game 1 of their college journey. As far as Tyra and Amanda ……. please stay healthy.
Hope the band is back for the next game.

  4. Cahill and Buss = Cahill and Buss
freshmen = unbelievably athletic, great fun to watch
Wickware = most improvement by a shooter I have maybe ever seen
Royster = much more confidence this year
Linsey Marchese = incredibly physically tough, especially for a freshman in the post

We may not be as good as last year, but it will be FUN to watch this team develop.

  5. If IU ladies have the good fortune of good health, IU ladies will be better than last year. Good health would be a good fortune.

  6. The added athletecism and quickness will make them better than last year in the long run once they develop and play without fouling so much.

  7. t and Steve W.
I certainly hope you’re both right (and I’m wrong).
It works better for me to expect less, then I’m less likely to be disappointed!

  8. NatHillIV, in both games so far, I have been watching Marchese very closely. You are correct, she is extremely physical defensively around the basket and in the lane. After seeing videos of her when she committed, I was happy to see a big girl that was so efficient around the basket. It’s a bit of a shame that we don’t emphasize inside play because I really believe she would be highly effect inside. Our offense is guard orientated and set up for our guards to drive to the basket with our post’s setting up at the free throw line. Her post skills when she was in high school were very impressive. Hopefully in the future she will get the opportunity to post up and score. Go Hoosiers!!

  9. This may happen some as season goes on….maybe at a freshman dose in different situations… and more so as her career progresses. How much might be another question?
