Oakes named semifinalist for Groza Award

Indiana senior kicker Griffin Oakes is one of 20 semifinalists for the Lou Groza Award, the Palm Beach County Sports Commission announced Thursday.

Oakes, a three-year starter, has connected on 11 of his 12 field goal attempts this season and is 25-for-26 on extra attempts. His only two misses this fall have been blocked.

The Groza Award is awarded annually to college football’s top kicker.

IU’s program leader with 64 career field goals, Oakes leads the Big Ten and is third nationally with a .917 field goal percentage. He’s 10-for-10 from inside the 50-yard line, including a 4-for-4 mark from 40 to 49 yards.

For his career, Oakes is 64-for-85 (75.3 percent) on field goals and 134-for-141 on extra points.

Three finalists for the award will be announced on Nov. 21.

  1. He is having a year like his sophomore year and I hope he continue to do well. Just get the KO in bounds.

  2. Glad to see this young man return to form for his Senior season and getting recognized for talent.
