Gameday central: Phinisee cleared to play at Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Indiana could have an extra hand available at Maryland.

Freshman point guard Rob Phinisee has been cleared to play in Friday night’s game, a program spokesman announced during warmups. Phinisee, who missed each of IU’s past three games after suffering a concussion on Dec. 19, cleared concussion protocol within the past 24 hours, though his role in the Maryland game had not yet been decided by the time IU’s team arrived at Xfinity Center around 5:30 on Friday evening.

Indiana coach Archie Miller said prior to Thursday’s practice in Bloomington that he did not anticipate Phinisee playing against the Terps, but that he hoped to get the 6-foot-1 newcomer “moving in the right direction.”

Now, it appears Phinisee has made the necessary strides.

“He’s worked more and more throughout the week. Yesterday, he practiced in a five-on-five setting. Today, he had a good shootaround. How we use him, what he’s able to do, how he’s able to handle the minutes without having participated in a game since, really, Butler, is going to be something (to watch).”

Phinisee, who started each of the first 12 games of the season, ranks second among Big Ten freshmen in 3-point shooting (44.8 percent), and also leads league freshmen in assists (42) and steals (13).

In other IU injury news, Miller said De’Ron Davis (ankle) is “50-50” to play tonight. If he can’t go, Miller expects to use Clifton Moore and Jake Forrester in larger doses. Forrester is also available after missing time recently with an ankle injury.

  1. May I pleaz note that I called the beginning of this game perfectly! (H4h). Did you notice all those empty seats? did you notice that their fans were trying to figure out whether they were at a basketball game?? And our players took advantage and simply destroyed the hapless Terp. We’ll see what happens 2nd half…do you expect that ?Turcheon is going to make the necessary adjusttments and out-coach Archie? (NOT likely). We are looking good for an away win, AWinAZ.

  2. Jeez ROCK, that comment didn’t age well.

Instead, we get smashed with a 16-0 run….Evan Fitzner was on the floor for its entirety. Coincidence? I think not. There’s a reason why this kid doesn’t get much playing time. Worst defender in the stripes since JBJ.

This was a tough loss. Only 7 TOs, shoot the three ball above 40%, and perfect from the line. But we got CREAMED on the glass.

Not feeling positive about the state of this team. 2 points from our bench! GAAAAH.

    1. The bench is sad. I have no clue about Fitzner.

There is no ignoring the fact that we have several players who were expected to be big contributors out of uniform.

So, do we bring back guys who basically haven’t played all season or redshirt the bunch?

  3. Is that wringing of the hands, Double Down?

    a. Not nearly enough of a fully ready Phinisee.
    b. Morgan with his worst game of the season. Bruno Fernando was just too much for him.
    c. Romeo was very impressive …but we can’t bank our season on one player. May I add he probably committed the dumbest foul of his young basketball life when, during the final minute of a slim chance to still win this one, fouling with 2 seconds
    remaining on Maryland’s shot
    d. Their crowd mirrored any typical BigTen crowd dialed in and dialed out(sadly, Assembly Hall isn’t much different with fans/students being more tied to iphones). But they were not “silent” throughout the game….That’s for damn sure.
    e. Justin Smith with way too many ticky tack stupid fouls. Otherwise, he could have had a very strong game to complement a better first half than usual for him of late.

  4. Chet, it is Fitzner that has no clue. Problem is, nor does Davis. Archie went to Fitzner because Davis’ brain freeze on the fast break early. Never saw the floor again. What looked like a strong bench in the preseason now looks like a liability.

    1. I don’t know what Davis is capable of. I ruptured an Achilles tendon. It is a weird injury.

Based on my own experience it is hard for me to critique someone rehabbing that injury. It’s not like one day you are suddenly good to go.

      It doesn’t work like that.

  5. Fitzner was a last minute addition because of a heavy liability already present on this team; the absence of more than one option in quality perimeter shooting.

Fitzner is in a rough stretch…but he wasn’t someone Archie brought in for muscle game or defensive threat. He was brought in as a band-aid for a gushing weakness.

Romeo buried his triples tonight, but we need more scoring options from the perimeter(especially against teams having their way with us inside).

  6. At the end of the day it was a one possession game and the guys didn’t close.

    Lots of subtexts.

    Injuries…missed baskets…rebounding…bench production…

At the end of the day it’s tough to win on the road in the Big Ten. Maryland is a good team.

  7. At the end of the day this is an ordinary injured team of recovery processed players. It is what it is. Pretty ordinary that needs some more talented big men. Will Romeo play another year? Morgan gone next year with Jackson Davis coming in IU will still be one 6’8”+ and a 6’10”+ big high 4+ star and 5 star short; that is if IU wants to be the IU of eliteness.

  8. The D did a decent job except for 18 offensive rebounds allowed.
Got to get Davis healthier. Moore considering the grind of the conference schedule has to get OJT. On display was Smith asserting himself more on offense. I don’t know about Green. Some possessions he plays with astute capabilities. Other times I think he tries to be another Romeo. I’ve come to believe Marquette(Fitzner’s finest hour)is not a really good team. Because he doesn’t have what it takes to play B1G round ball. Having Robert back will win 2-3 games that would be lost w/o him. Road games in the B1G separate the good from the not quite as good.

  9. Uh no, Romeo will go pro next year. Would be a fool to turn down guaranteed money. As they said last night, nba scouts there are salivating on the potential. So enjoy him as I am this year, and wish him well at the next level next year.

  10. Another kid is gonna pass on being an Indiana legend? Another top recruit is simply satisfied with having an Assembly Hall pool table room named after him(cue balls rather than cue cards…I suppose).
Another Indiana product does not want to be the centerpiece on ending the over 30 year banner drought?

20 million guaranteed is worth more than the above? Then good riddance. Have your pool table…..and your mansion…and that blank banner(less) stare on your face. Basketball is a five man sport, sport. You should have taken up golf.
