Trending now: IU basketball news and notes

By the numbers

5: Wins in the seven games this season decided by five points or less.

9: Fouls by Jake Forrester in his last 19 minutes.

22: 3-pointers made by Indiana in two games vs. Iowa last season.

Fitzner ends his drought

The 3s stopped falling for Evan Fitzner sometime in late December.

Entering Saturday’s game at Michigan State, the graduate transfer’s last 3-pointer came in a blowout win over Central Arkansas on Dec. 19. In the meantime, Fitzner found himself mired in an eight-game drought, during which he shot 0-for-12 from beyond the arc.

Fitzner was brought to Bloomington to give IU some shooting punch on the outside. Instead, he’s shooting merely 31 percent from 3-point range for the season and 11 percent from beyond the arc in conference play, making multiple 3-pointers in a game only twice — and not since Nov. 27.

Now, Indiana coach Archie Miller is hopeful that Fitzner’s second-half 3 at Michigan State is enough to get him back on track.

“Great kids, and great workers and great team-mentality guys, it can come back around for them,” Miller said. “When you’re a fifth-year grad guy and you have one opportunity and sometimes it doesn’t go well for you, you tend to see those guys really shut down. He hasn’t shut down. To be honest, he just needed to see one go in the other night, and hopefully that will mean the world of difference as we keep going.”

Resume update

Indiana is slotted at No. 44 in the latest NET rankings, which replaces the RPI and relies on results, strength of schedule, game location and the quality of wins and losses, among other analytical factors to form its rankings.

The Hoosiers have four Quadrant 1 wins, which are classified as home victories against teams slotted No. 1 through 30 in the NCAA NET rankings, neutral-floor wins against teams ranked No. 1 through 50 and road victories against squads ranked No. 1 through 75.

Thursday’s game against Iowa, which is ranked 22nd in the NET, will be IU’s latest chance for a Quadrant 1 victory.

  1. Again Mike, thanks for this update! Keep up the good work. It always seems to be harder to find stats on the women than the men, as a IU women’s season ticket holder, this is much appreciated!!
