Gest puts name in transfer portal

Redshirt junior running back Cole Gest has entered his name in the NCAA transfer portal, according to a program spokesman.

Gest, who suffered two season-ending injuries in his Hoosier career, including last year’s in the season opener, wasn’t able to carve out a niche in the Hoosiers’ deep backfield. His last carries came in the Ohio State game, putting him at five rushing attempts for minus-1 yard on the season.

Gest also lost his kick-returning duties in the season opener to freshman David Ellis.

IU’s backfield has now lost two players to transfer this season. Freshman Ivory Winters, who departed for Southeast Missouri State, put his name in the portal prior to the season opener. But it is still relatively deep with young talent, including sophomores Stevie Scott and Ronnie Walker and freshman Sampson James.

  1. Sorry to see him go, but I don’t blame Gest for transferring. He had some bad breaks that limited his opportunities and now finds himself stuck behind three studs that are bigger than he is. He’ll make a great back for a mid-major program, probably located in Ohio, that has a good O-line. Ohio University, Miami of Ohio, Bowling Green or Toledo could be options.

    I wish him the best.

  2. The reality is, in a successful recruiting campaign a coach will recruit players better than the ones already on the roster.

Throw in a couple season ending injuries and it is probably best to start over where you have more value.

Thanks for everything. Wish you a successful future.
