Stepaniak invited to NFL Combine

Indiana offensive guard Simon Stepaniak was listed Friday among the invitees to the 2020 NFL Combine.

Stepaniak, a 6-foot-4, 321-pounder from Hamilton, Ohio, is one of 337 athletes who can now participate in the testing event in Indianapolis, which runs from Feb. 24 to March 1. He is one of 52 offensive linemen selected.

In his IU career, Stepaniak started 31 games, all but one at right guard. He was a team captain in 2019 and finished the season as a third-team All-Big Ten selection. He wasn’t able to play in the Hoosiers’ finale at the Gator Bowl due to an undisclosed injury.

If he’s able to participate at the combine, the Hoosier lineman will have a chance to show off his strength. Bruce Feldman of The Athletic put Stepaniak on his “Freaks List” in July, noting the fifth-year senior could bench press 225 pounds 41 times.

By comparison, former Hoosier guard Wes Martin logged 38 reps of 225 pounds at IU’s pro day. Martin was later selected in the fourth round of the 2019 NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins.

Stepaniak was the Hoosiers only invitee to the combine. Here is a full list of the athletes invited as of Friday.

  1. I hope he can really shine at the combine and make his NFL dream. It is good to see players work hard and have their shot at the NFL.
