Powers ready to play?

After practice Tuesday evening, Indiana quarterback Blake Powers said he’s ready to play this week.

Powers said he was treated for leg cramps during Saturday’s game, but could have returned to the game. He appeared to have his left ankle taped Tuesday.

During a Tuesday afternoon press conference, Indiana coach Terry Hoeppner said he thought Powers was OK Saturday after the game, but “on Sunday, when I saw him then, he was a little more dinged than I thought he was.”

Hoeppner said Powers’ condition was much improved Tuesday, but coaches would be careful with Powers in practice. He also said in his post-game press conference and on Tuesday that X-rays on Powers had been negative.

Powers said after practice that he has not had any X-rays. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said.

Reporters could not observe which Indiana players were on the practice field Tuesday, or which were playing with the first string. Hoeppner has closed practice for all of this week.

Yellow tape with the word “caution” blocked the parking lot next to Indiana’s practice field Tuesday to try to ensure that no visitors could watch practice.
