Hager and Hagerup pick Hoosiers

After a big football recruiting weekend in which close to a dozen prospects visited Bloomington, the Hoosiers received two verbal commitments Sunday.

The one who you will most likely see on the field right away is Chris Hagerup, a punter/quarterback from Whitefish Bay, Wis. With the graduation of Tyson Beattie, Indiana will need a new punter next season.

The 6-foot-5, 205-pound Hagerup was a first team all-state punter last season, averaging 45 yards a punt. He said he threw for 1,100 yards and 13 touchdowns on a team that ran the ball more than it passed.

The other new verbal commitment came from Josh Hager, a 6-foot-8, 265-pound offensive lineman from McCluer North High School in the St. Louis area. Hager, who fits the mold of the tall offensive lineman IU has been recruiting, said he also had scholarship offers from Minnesota and Northwestern.

Hager and Hagerup – can you believe the similarity in the two names? – give Indiana 13 verbal commitments for the 2007 class that will sign letters of intent in February.
