Indiana a 13-point favorite

The Hoosiers are favored by 13 points against Akron according to today’s line.

If Indiana wins Saturday, it will be just the second time since 1994 that the Hoosiers have started the season at 3-0. The other time was Terry Hoeppner’s first season when they began the year by defeating Central Michigan, Nicholls State and Kentucky, but after that won just one more game the rest of the year.

Akron (1-1) won its season opener against Army, 22-14, before falling Saturday to Ohio State, 20-2. The Zips trailed the Buckeyes just 3-2 at halftime. Offensively, Akron managed only three first downs and 69 yards in the game.

Last year, Akron fell to 5-7 after having winning records the three previous years. The Zips often struggled in running the ball last year and they did again Saturday in managing just three yards on the ground against OSU.

Akron runs a 3-3-5 defensive formation, like Indiana State, and is considered strong against the pass (allowed Ohio State just 169 passing yards). Ohio State did manage 196 rushing yards, but much of that came on a couple of Chris Wells’ runs late in the game after the outcome had been decided.

This Saturday’s game at Memorial Stadium is at noon. The IU schedule cards say it is at 6 p.m., but that is incorrect. Hurrah for Doug and Chris who will get their stories filed on the same day the game starts for the first time this season.
