Hoosier Ladies face Lady Stars tonight

The Indiana women’s basketball team debuts tonight at 7 p.m. in an exhibiton contest with the Hoosier Lady Stars, who despite their nomenclature do not feature any former IU players, although they do have a handful that attended school in the state.

G Tina Bolte and C Raechelle Hampton both played at Ball State, F Kia Hayes at IUPUI, F Amy Amstutz-Watson attended Indiana State, and C Courtney Urquhart went to Butler.

Coach Jack said she’s watching for things like passion, enthusiasm, heart, and details such as boxing out in the two preseason warmups today and Tuesday. “We want to be able to play in March, and in order to do that, you gotta take steps of playing better every single day.”

Hoosier senior guard Nikki Smith had this to say about the outlook for the offense as play begins: “I don’t really think we have a main scoring option…Any one from me all the way down to the freshmen can put the ball in the basket. It’s just a matter of going out there, playing hard, and just having fun.”

Sophomore and new starting point guard Jamie Braun has not put any extra pressure on herself to win an award this year, having collected laurels as the Big Ten’s Sixth Player of the Year in 2006-07. Braun had this to say about tonight’s game: “Here it’s just getting comfortable at the point spot…just measuring myself up against other teams seeing if they throw things at me, how I react and all that.”

Freshman guard Whitney Lindsay is delighted at how fast she and her five fellow classmates have quickly bonded after a summer of hanging out and attending classes together. Tonight’s game will be the first time they have to get used to some of the college game’s distinctions, like the 30-second shot clock and the 20 minute halves.

Said Lindsay: “My favorite basketball related thing would be just when we’re all together in the locker room, laughing, joking, getting ready for practice…That kind of stuff is what gets us ready to come out here on the court.”
