Women’s hoops v. Showtime Skins

Jamie Braun paced the Hoosiers again on Tuesday night, scoring 18 points in just 21 minutes on the floor. Amber Jackson added 14 for Indiana, while three players on the Autralian traveling team finished with eight each.

The Skins shot 19.7 percent for the ballgame but did manage to outrebound the Hoosiers by three. The Skins’ 29 turnovers was a main factor. IU cooled off from the floor in the second half, making 32.4 percent of their attempts compared to 56.1 in the first.

IU freshman forward Ebony Jackson had a rough go in the first half, playing just two minutes while getting whistled for two fouls and recording a turnover. She settled down when she reentered the game, getting some rebounds and in the last 10 minutes managed to get 11 points, some more boards (6 total) and three steals, though she did suffer the embarrassment of an airballed free throw. All part of the learning curve for these six newbies.

Second Half:
14:05-Ashley Marble makes a 3 for the Showtime Skins, giving her team the lead…over IU’s Jamie Braun. The Skins have 21, Braun 18. IU, 57-21.

Hoosier frosh Whitney Lindsay has five assists in the game. Coach Jack should be thrilled to see that depth at point guard should not be a problem. Braun may be the starter, but Lindsay will give the team some lineup flexibility, opening up the possibility of a three-guard set with Nikki Smith, Braun, and Lindsay at the same time. Braun has said she prefers the wing, but will probably excel at either spot.

Whitney Thomas got some late cheers with a big block that sent the ball into the crowd and a bucket soon after, assisted by Lindsay.

7:56-Timeout…Though neither is in the game right now and probably won’t return so that the freshmen can get their work in, Amber Jackson and Braun combined for a 15 of 22 shooting performance tonight. Braun has 18 points and Jackson 14. No one on the Skins has more than 8.

Lydia Serfling, IU’s walkon and the crowd’s object of affection, checked in with 6:32 to play.

3:25-After leading by 40 pointz at the half, Indiana has only outscored the Australian team 21-18 in the second frame.

Lindsay great finish, breaking some ankles at the top of the key and taking the ball in herself for a pretty layup in the last minute.

Final: Indiana 80, Skins 37

First Half:
17:07-Indiana has started strong again, as well they should, building a 12-0 lead to open play against the Australian team. Nikki Smith has sunk a pair of 3s, and Amber Jackson has four points.

16:35-And it’s 16-0 now as Kim Roberson gets two quick buckets, one of them on a steal that left her all alon heading the other way. Freshmen Jori Davis and Whitney Lindsay are the first players off Felisha Legette-Jack’s bench. Davis was also one of the first subs in Saturday’s exhibition.

14:14-The Skins get their first field goal of the evening on a 3 by Nardine Yousef, but it is answered quickly by a Davis 3. Lindsay then gets a steal for an easy layup. IU leads, 26-4.

9:18-Jackson has a seat and gets an ovation from the crowd, sparse as it is. Jackson is strutting some of the stuff that had her dominating the Western Athletic Conference a couple years back, finding her way to the basket at will.

7:54-Timeout…Jackson has 10 points, and Smith 9, and IU is cruising, 33-7.

3:07-Jamie Braun is enjoying a fine shooting outing, having knocked down 6 of 8 field goal attempts. Braun’s 14 points now leads all scorers. She had a game-high 17 in Saturday’s game.

Halftime: Indiana 53, Skins 13

Braun carries on, getting a crowd reaction with a late dribbling move en route to a layup. She has 16 points, five rebounds, and four assists.
