Hoosier fans party in Paradise

A Varsity Club party that filled the grand ballroom of the DoubleTree Paradise Valley Resort with Hoosier fans is just wrapping up.

The party, which is at the same hotel where Indiana’s team is staying, brought out numerous familiar faces from IU and a few we haven’t seen for many years.  They included several members of the board of trustees, VP Terry Clapacs, Jane Hoeppner, Jerry Yeagley, former players like Trent Smock and Troy Drake, coach Bill Lynch, former assistant coaches Morris Watts, Bob Otolski and Pete Compise (all under Lee Corso), lots of people from IU’s athletics administration and long-time fans like Jerry Archer of Greenwood who drove 34 hours, with an overnight stop in Dallas, to arrive in the Phoenix area today.

A number of IU players wandered through the party to say hello to their fans.

Archer, 69, hasn’t missed an IU home football game in 38 years. He travels to many of the road games with Rick Jerrell of Lawrenceville, Ill. Jerrell, who has missed only two home games since 1976, drove about 24 hours to arrive in Arizona.

“We wouldn’t miss this for anything,” said Jerrell, 48, who along with Archer will attend their sixth IU bowl game Saturday . “I’m wound up. I’ll rest when I get back home.”
