Post-game thoughts

Kelvin Sampson leaves the floor after his first loss at Assembly Hall.

UConn 68, Indiana 63

What Indiana Did Well:

  • There wasn’t much. IU came out hot, hitting three 3-pointers in a row to open up a 9-0 lead early. IU did shoot well from behind the arc, but much of that came late in the game when UConn had control
  • Bench play: Surprisingly, IU’s scorers down the stretch were not D.J. White and Eric Gordon- it was Lance Stemler and Jordan Crawford. Crawford did it all: 3-pointers, drives, mid-range shots, and Stemler had back-to-back possessions with a 3-pointer from the corner and a nice rebound-putback on the next.

What Indiana Didn’t Do Well:

  • Get stops when they needed them. Time and again, UConn was able to get the ball down low, use their size, and finish around the rim. For much of the game, Sampson used a four guard lineup and it wasn’t effective.
  • Run a good offensive game. Indiana just never got into an offensive flow, and the one-on-one stuff that Jamarcus Ellis and Gordon were doing just didn’t cut it. It takes the other four guys on the floor out of the play and most times, they’re not able to get good shots off.
  • Gordon continues to struggle. He’s no longer affecting the game offensively like he did earlier in the season. Is he in the midst of a mid-season struggle, or are teams finding a better way to go about guarding him?

  1. Sorry……just venting after the loss and I have to post it twice. I agree that Tone and Eric forced way too much, but our guard defense lost the game. I understand Armon has a bad wheel and loses a bit, but EJ and others got beat just as often. Plus, our intensity looked about 2.5 points below UConn. Ours is good, theirs was great. As a spectator, you could see they wanted it more.

A good basketball game. BTW….Jim Calhoun is taller when you see him live. Life goes on Hoosier fans… do not give up. Coach, watch the films. Solve that penetration thing. It seems to be a problem.

  2. I AM A IU AND A SAMPSON FAN,BUT HE NEEDS TO TEACH THEM HOW TO SET UP BLOCKS AND TO USE THEM ON OFFENCE.STOP SOME OF THIS ONE ON ONE CRAP,NOT ALL THOUGH.ALSO HOW TO SWITCH MEN ON DEFENCE.GORDON NEEDS TO KNOW HOW TO PULL UP AND SHOOT MIDRANGE JUMPERS.
