Big game tonight. Who ya got?

Like I said in our vodcast yesterday, I think the environment Eric Gordon and Kelvin Sampson will face in Illinois’ Assembly Hall will be as intense as they’ve ever experienced.

There’s no doubt in my mind that the Illini have had this game circled on their calender all year, and if there’s one game coach Bruce Weber wants to win more than any other, it’s the one tonght.

I, for one, am looking forward to seeing how harsh the crowd will be on the 19 year-old Gordon.

  • I think Brian Randle could have a big game offensively because of IU’s weakness at the four spot. Do you all out there think Kyle Taber will start again? I highly doubt it, on the road in a huge Big Ten game. I’m guessing Lance Stemler will get the nod.
  • This will be a great chance to see how tough this team is, like Kelvin Sampson said earlier this week. And more particularly, how Gordon handles the insane amount of pressure he’ll be under. The Orange Krush, the Illini student section, is surely going to make their thoughts known every time EJ touches the ball.

Prediction: Illinois 65, Indiana 58

  1. IU 60 IL 55

If the IU team that showed up in the second half at Wisconsin makes it to Illinois they have a fighting chance. Expect very physical play. Expect the typical home cooking. Gordon and White have to stay on the floor and out of foul trouble. A third scoring option must step up.

  2. UI 65 – IU 57

Indiana is in a serious funk and this game is a grudge game for UI coaches. We won’t get many calls and the fans will be awful. We are starting and playing a kid that hasn’t played much all year and another batch of injuries has hit the team. UI will not let Gordon go off and the rest of the team is just not scoring beyond DJ. I expect a painful ugly game and an IU loss.

  3. Unfortunately, I think it’ll be an “L”. We shall see. I think if we lose we’re nearly out of the race.

  4. Mark, just heard the same thing…does anyone what’s going on?!?…it’s going to be a hostile environment, I sure would have liked his senior status at this one

  5. Missing a senior tonight? OUCH!
I can’t see KT starting tonight, but I hope he
gets few minutes. If he is a one-game wonder, that just makes KS look like a silly manipulator.

What we need is a big lead early, and a sustained, consistent effort by everyone.

The Illinois crowd will be UGLY unfortunately, but also unfortunately we can’t complain much because we have had a couple of UGLY crowds too in the recent past. “Oh that just the way college sports is…..” It shouldn’t be.

Go Hoosiers, we need a win.

  6. An hour before gametime, and I’ve got a feeling. Other old-timers will remember a similar game at Illannoys in ’81 – IU was having trouble catching it’s stride. We were not tough enough, not smart enough, not playing up to potential. That night in the Wrong Assembly Hall we were tougher, smarter, and we never looked back. I still remember Tolbert, Turner, and Risley just out-manning the ‘competition.’ Let’s hope DJ, Mikey, Big D, Lance, and Tabor show us the same thing – I think they just might.
