Leading Scorers:
PU: F Lakisha Freeman, 6-1, Jr., 12.5 ppg
IU: G Jamie Braun, 5-8, So., 14.8 ppg

It’s a season-series rubber match for the Hoosiers and Boilermakers, both of whom won on the road in the year’s previous two meetings. Lakisha “KiKi” Freeman scored 15 points and center Danielle Campbell had a double-double (13 pts, 10 rbds) as well as 3 blocks in Purdue’s Jan. 3 win at Assembly Hall. In West Lafayette on Jan. 14, Campbell had another double-double (15 pts, 11 rbds) but so did Hoosier forward Whitney Thomas with a monstrous 17 points and 18 boards, and Jamie Braun chipped in 14 as Indiana won for just the third time in the last 22 meetings between the schools. In that second game, Amber Jackson had a brief shoving altercation with Campbell and both players were assessed a technical foul.

Second Half:

Indiana 31, Purdue 29: KiKi Freeman again hits for Purdue, this time from the left baseline, and has 10 points now. Hoosier freshman Whitney Lindsay nails a 3!!! from the top of the key. 17:10 to go in the game.

Indiana 33, Purdue 31: Kalika France gets on the board for Purdue, but Jamie Braun answers for the Hoosiers with a splendid cut to the basket from the right side and a soft one-handed flip shot that gets nothing but net. 15:37 remaining.

Purdue 38, Indiana 33: Keshia Mosley is up to 9 points now after two layups in traffic, and then a ridiculous spin move that sure looked like a travel to Coach Jack and assistant Jose Mori, who asks the official why that wasn’t called. If anyone remembers, Mosley was huge in Purdue’s win over IU on Jan. 3 in Bloomington, when the freshman came off the bench and scored 10 points in 16 minutes of playing time. Coach Jack pouts and calls a timeout with 13:18 left in the game.

Purdue 40, Indiana 35: Coach Jack gets upset with Kim Roberson, who catches a long pass from Nikki Smith on a fastbreak, then tries a silly reverse-spinning-one-handed shot under the bucket that doesn’t go in. Roberson is yanked immediately, and Coach Jack’s ire increases when the officials again don’t call a travel. She sits down hard on the bench, covers her mouth with her hand, and says something (probably not good) to Mori and fellow assistant Marc Wilson.

Purdue 42, Indiana 39: Whitney Thomas makes a good move, stripping a Purdue player of the ball after a rebound on the IU end, grabbing it, and making a layup.

Purdue 42, Indiana 41: This game is intense, by the way. Amber Jackson cleans up a missed shot with an offensive board and putback. Timeout with 9:12 to go.

Indiana 44, Purdue 42: Thomas with a 3-point play. Timeout with 7:43 on the clock.

Indiana 48, Purdue 45: Jackson makes another short jumper. Another timeout now with 6:11 to go. Can the Hoosiers hold on?

Indiana 48, Purdue 48: Thomas is whistled for her fourth foul with 5:26 to play and is pulled out of the game. FahKara Malone makes both FTs.

Purdue 52, Indiana 50: Malone gives the Boilers the lead with a steal and layup. Malone has hit her jersey number with 20 points. Timeout with 3:57 left, and Thomas checks back in.

Purdue 55, Indiana 50: Malone is on fire, nailing a 3!!! from the right corner for the very important two-possession lead. Malone has 23 points. 3:01

Purdue 59, Indiana 50: Danielle Campbell might have sealed the deal for the Boilers with a 3-point play and 2 minutes to play.

Purdue 60, Indiana 50: Thomas is gone with her fifth foul, and time is running out on Indiana.

FINAL: Purdue 64, Indiana 54: The Hoosiers were in it late, even leading, but Purdue point guard FahKara Malone’s 26 points and deadly 3s were too much to overcome. Indiana is most likely bound for the WNIT.

————————

First Half:

Indiana 6, Purdue 6: Boilermaker point guard FahKara Malone looks juiced for this tilt. She raced down for an uncontested layup, then ripped the ball out of Jamie Braun’s hands on the Hoosier side and jetted back for another score. Amber Jackson tied the game at 6 all with an 18-footer or so from the left wing. The clock reads 15:23.

Indiana 9, Purdue 8: Braun is done with her scoreless streak in the tournament, which lasted one game. She busts a 3!!! for the lead.

Purdue 13, Indiana 9: Whitney Thomas unleashed a sweet block right in front of me, but it goes to waste as Malone grabs the ball, still in bounds, and nails a 3!!! Then, KiKi Freeman hits a nice jumper around the right baseline. Timeout with 11:56 to go in the half, and the Hoosiers DO NOT want to get in an early hole.

Purdue 15, Indiana 14: Jackson makes a solid defensive play, blocking a shot and grabbing the rebound in bounds, and the Hoosiers get the lead back briefly on a 3 from Jori Davis. But Freeman takes it back with a jumper form the left corner of the key.

Purdue 17, Indiana 16: Official timeout with 7:21 to go in half one. Purdue freshman Keshia Mosley gives the Boilers a three-point lead, but Thomas answers by getting a layup in traffic to bounce through. She’s fouled on the play but can’t make her free throw.

Purdue 19, Indiana 18: Freeman is on, hitting again from the same spot on the right baseline. She’s 4-for-5 now with 8 points. Nikki Smith answers for IU, geting a running jumper to fall to a murmur of appreciation from the Hoosier faithful, who are surrounded by gold and black. 4:20 to go.

Purdue 24, Indiana 22: The teams exchange baskets for a couple trips. Kim Roberson gets a shot to drop after not seeing anybody open for a pass, rewarded by Coach Jack jumping for joy for a second. On the other end, a mad scramble for a loose ball ends with Malone knocking down a 3!!! Malone has 10 to lead the floor. Timeout with 2:09 to go.

Purdue 26, Indiana 24: Smith ties the game with a left-handed layup, but Malone gets to 12 points on the day with a beautiful move for a layup on Braun, who fouls her. Malone misses the freebie. Timeout with 41.5 seconds left.

HALFTIME: Indiana 27, Purdue 26: It’s Roberson with a patented steal at midcourt, then jetting down for a layup And-1. Roberson MAKES her free throw for the Hoosier lead, and the Boilers cannot get a last try to fall.

Halftime Stats:
Purdue
FahKara Malone, 12 points, 3 steals
Lakisha Freeman, 8 points

Indiana
Amber Jackson, 8 points, 4 rebounds
Kim Roberson, 7 points
Jamie Braun, 3 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists

  1. Thank you girls for a wonderful, exciting season. If we get a WNIT bid, I hope they go far. I would like to see NCAA bid, but I don’t think they will get that.
