Crean brings two more from Marquette

Indiana coach Tom Crean announced today that he’s hired Jayd Grossman as assistant athletic director for men’s basketball administration and Brian Barone as video coordinator. Both were on Crean’s staff at Marquette.

Here’s the entire release from IU:

Bloomington, Indiana — Indiana University Mens Basketball Coach Tom Crean has announced the hiring of Jayd Grossman and Brian Barone to administrative positions within the program effective immediately. Both were on Creans staff at Marquette. Grossman will serve as Assistant Athletic Director for Men’s Basketball Administration and Barone has been added as the teams
Video Coordinator.

“I am very excited that Jayd and Brian are coming with us to Indiana ,” said Crean. “I thought it was very important for me to fill open positions with individuals who are familiar with how I like to do things and both are two of the best at what they do. Jayd did a tremendous job in his role as Coordinator of Student-Athlete Performance and men’s basketball athletic trainer at Marquette, but now will have the opportunity to focus on administrative matters on a day-to-day basis as it relates to our men’s basketball program. Brian is a young man who grew up in this business and played for me at Marquette. He continues on the road to success in this
profession and I am glad he is with us at IU “

Grossman spent five seasons with the Marquette men’s basketball program, and last year was his first as Coordinator of Student-Athlete Performance. In that role, he supervised the sports medicine, strength and conditioning and academic services departments within the athletic department while providing
several specific services for the men’s basketball team.

In addition to overseeing all aspects of the players’ health and nutrition, Grossman also supervised the team’s conditioning program and served as the team’s travel coordinator.
Grossman came to Marquette after serving as the men’s basketball athletic trainer at the University of Cincinnati from 1993 to 2003.

Grossman earned national recognition when he was selected to work at the USA Basketball National Team Trials in 2000, and then in again in 2001 when he was named as athletic trainer for the gold-medal winning USA 21-and-under World Championship team. Prior to his time at Cincinnati, he was a graduate assistant athletic trainer at the University of Virginia from August 1992 to June 1993.

A native of Evansville, Wis., Grossman earned a bachelor’s of science degree in athletic training from Wisconsin-LaCrosse in 1992 and a master’s in education from Virginia in 1993. Jayd and his wife, Juli, have two daughters, Mardi (5) and Madeline, who will turn one later this year.

Barone comes to IU after serving last year as the coordinator of basketball operations and video coordinator at Marquette.

Prior to his return to Milwaukee, Barone spent four seasons as an assistant coach at Illinois State University under head coach Porter Moser.

Barone joined the Redbirds after one season (2001-02) at Garden City Community College, working under head coach Earl Diddle.

He also spent one year (2000-01) at Central Florida Community College in Ocala, Fla. He helped guide the Pirates to an overall record of 21-11 and a Mid-Florida Conference Tournament Championship. The squad also advanced to the NJCAA Region VII semifinals.

Playing for his father, Tony Sr., Barone spent his first two collegiate
playing seasons at Texas A&M. He was tabbed honorable mention all-conference as a sophomore and received GTE Big XII Academic All-Conference accolades as well.

He transferred to Marquette for his final two seasons, making his debut in 1999-00. That campaign was Crean’s first with the University. Barone served as team captain during his tenure and was also named to the Conference USA All-Academic Team.

Barone earned his bachelor’s in communications from Marquette in 2000 and completed his master’s work at MU in the same field in 2002.

He and his wife, Mimi, were married in August of 2007.

  1. “Jayd…will have the opportunity to focus on administrative matters on a day-to-day basis as it relates to our men’s basketball program”
Does this mean Tim Garl is remaining as our trainer? He and BJ McElroy (team secretary)have been with the program since 1980 and form the very foundation of this team’s operations. It’d be a shame for us to lose either of these high-quality and extremely devoted personnel.

  2. Any word on what Dan Dakich is going to be doing? Is he staying at IU? Does he go to Assembly Hall on a daily basis now?

  3. go and watch “hoosiers” some more, maybe you and shooter can watch the paint dry down in Indiana. If it is such a great school, then why do you have players get kicked off the team, leave early for the NBA, have coaching turnover, used to have an angry old man throw chairs at officials, etc. WOW! what a great tradition. How is Mike Davis doing? How about Coach Sampson? In 3 years, you will be begging to get rid of Crean. Will we have some NCAA sanctions coming your way? What year did you last win it all? I am actually from Illinois, not Marquette. I cant wait for this season, will you guys have to fill a team? You will probably have to bring in OLLIE to shoot free throws bc your water boy will be your 5th player. INDIANA SPORTS IS A HAS BEEN, THAT IS WHY THEY MAKE SPORTS MOVIES ABOUT INDIANA SPORTS.
But keep believing, and maybe on Sat mornings you all can get a free haircut.
