Crean offers ’08 big (but skinny) man

According to John Decker at, Indiana has offered a scholarship to Maurice Sutton, a 6-10, 200-pound center/forward out of Largo High School in Upper Marlboro, Maryland.

Sutton’s stock slipped a bit last summer as he didn’t see much time with his AAU team. In fact, Crean backed off on Sutton a bit while he was recruiting him to Marquette.

But Sutton had a terrific senior season, averaging 18 points, 12 rebounds and nine blocks per game while leading his team to a state title.

He also had 17 points in just 13 minutes last weekend while playing at the Derby Festival Classic in Louisville. That has stirred increased interest in a player with considerable upside, if not girth (yet).

He is also considering Boston College, Villanova, Syracuse, Seton Hall and Kentucky.

  1. I guess he wanted to play for Kentucky but they don’t have a scholarship currently. This could be a great addition if it happens.

  2. Sort of scared of the Lindeman/Mandeville(sp) type players…. Sounds like great numbers and could be a project that could turn out to be beneficial by the time the young man graduates. Although IU hardly ever “turns out” big guys. Could be a “poor man’s” Tyler Zeller. Glad we didn’t sign Zeller though…

  3. I’m also concerned about big men in that 200 lb range but I have faith that coach Crean knows what the kid could bring to IU.

What I don’t understand is the Tyler Zeller comment from the previous poster (Ummm).

Had Crean been the coach at IU instead of Sampson he would have done everything possible to land TZ. In Crean’s uptempo push the ball offense Zeller would have been a perfect fit.

  4. This would be nice for them to land someone bigger than 6-8. Then if can get him on Deandre’s diet we could have a hell of a player in a year or two.

  5. He is one of three “big man” scholys we have offered for 08 that I know of. Him, Garibay out in Cali (ranked 29th on scout according to HN), and Harrellson who Kentucky is also interested in. I suppose this kid probably has the most upside, as the other two are big primarily post players.

My money is on Harrellson to commit this week. Hes the shorter of the three, but the most skilled currently as he will be JUCO transfer, but he will still have 3 years of eligibility.

  6. Kentucky doesn’t want him because he’s a PROJECT. UK needs impact players now, and Sutton is currently being recruited over by bigger stronger forwards. Good fit for IU being that you simply need to put together a team next year.

  7. I hope we can land us a dominate big man. I just hope we’re not facing a post season ban, that scares all the talent away.

  8. You’ll learn to love Crean and his passion, but don’t expect great big men from him….he plays a gaurd oriented offense and wasn’t able to land a marginal big during his time at MU.
