Off-topic: Earthquake rattles Bloomington

So, Hoosier Scoopers, did you feel the earthquake? From where I live in Ellettsville, just west of Bloomington, it really rattled our house. I woke up in confusion and amazement wondering if it was an earthquake or an explosion I was feeling.

I remember experiencing a couple of earthquakes in Indiana in the past, but never one as strong as that. We didn’t have any property damage as far as I know, but our house shook like we were on an old-fashioned roller coaster as it rattles back and forth.

Just after it happened, I called the National Weather Service in Indianapolis and spoke with meterologist Steve Haynes who said the earthquake at 5:39 a.m. was a 5.4 on the Richter scale and was centered about 20 miles southeast of Olney, Ill. Do we have any readers from that area? I’m wondering what it was like there.

I also spoke with Bethany Nolan, our early morning reporter for HeraldTimesOnline.com and The Herald-Times. She said that as she was getting ready to leave for work this morning, the quake scared the you-know-what out of her. Bethany will be providing updates this morning on HTO about the earthquake, which she has already reported was felt as far away as St. Louis, throughout Central Indiana and down into Kentucky. Our first report from the AP this morning said there weren’t any immediate reports of injuries.

I wish I could go back to sleep now, but I don’t see that happening. Instead, I’ll get an early start on a workday that will end this evening – barring any further acts of God – with covering Indiana’s final spring football practice before tomorrow’s 2 p.m. Spring Game.

  1. OMG, i was still awake when it happened, i was wondering what was going on at first and then it got stronger and it woke up my roommmate!!!

  2. I woke up with my bed moving and items on my night stand rattling. This has happened a couple times before in the past year but never this strong and long. At first I thought I was dreaming. Could not go back to sleep so I got online and glad to read that someone else felt it also.

  3. It woke me up out of a dead sleep. First I thought it was the air/heating unit kicking in for the complex. Scared me half to death. Woke me up, my boyfriend and my son.

  4. I am in St. Louis on business and woke when I thought someone was violently shaking my bed. Pretty scary when you are in a middle floor of a high rise hotel!

  5. Yes, yes, I felt it too! I live on the west side of Bloomington, about 1 mile from Bloomington Hospital. I went to bed around 4:30 and just fell asleep before I felt it! I didn’t know what it was, and I wondered if it was earthquake! Wow, that was a first time for me!

You, your boyfriend and your son living together. So totally like Bloomington and the general lack of morals among the population!

  7. Hoosier In Houston’s right. You should totally kick your son out and get like a hot female roomate.

  8. Lol Nacho. The world is turning into a crappy place fast because of people like the Houston Hoser. I know many many dads who dont give any time to their own kids. I myself am a stand in dad looking to adopt one day. So shame on you, Houston Hoser, for giving an unsolicited opinion, pushing your morals on people, and making up your mind about someone without knowing the whole story. What if the boyfriend is the dad? And they cant marry for whatever reason. People need to learn to mind their own business. Have a nice day.

  9. So there is no truth to the rumor this was just Deandre Thomas taking part in an early moring running program.

  10. I also felt it here from the Chicago area…
Just a thought – who is ANYONE to judge another person? In reference to Hoosier in Houston – look in the mirror!

  11. It’s the Crean Effect.

Tom Crean is hired by IU about two weeks ago, yesterday he lands his first recruit and today we have an earthquake throughout the midwest.

    Coincidence? I don’t think so.

  12. Hey Hoser, checked out the single parent stats on Houston compared to Bloomington? No, didn’t think so. Stupid redneck.
