Tyler Cox Walk-Off Granny

Indiana has made it to the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament.

After blowing a three-run lead in the top of the ninth to go down by one, in part due to an error by shortstop Tyler Cox, the Hoosiers defeated Penn State, 11-8, when Cox belted a grand slam homer with one out in the bottom of the frame.

Penn State had beaten Indiana all five times they had previously played this season.

Indiana will meet Purdue on Saturday at 3:35 p.m., airing on the Big Ten Network. If they win that one, they’ll have to play again Saturday night against Michigan. And because of the double elimination format, a Sunday game is in the works if the Hoosiers are to vie for the conference title.

IU’s ninth-inning rally came off of Nittany Lions’ closer Drew O’Neill, who was in his third inning of work. O’Neill entered the game with a 0.71 ERA and 11 saves in 25 appearances.

In Friday’s opener, Josh Phegley went 4-for-4 with two home runs and six RBIs to lead the Hoosiers to a 14-7 win over Illinois. Tyler Tufts went the distance on the mound.

  1. Congratulations, Hoosiers! When I saw us go down three in the top of the ninth I was concerned, but what a great comeback.

Never seen a walf-off before…must really be something!

  2. OMG GREATEST GAME EVER!!! I thought we were done in the top of the 9th, well, first I thought we had it, but then I thought we were done. That PSU pitcher had been lights out the entire year, .071 ERA. Then our #9 hitter comes through!

LOL it was great walking out and telling the Purdoo fans “see you tomorrow”! All of them were rooting for PSU and being the obnoxious people they are, it just made the granny that much better!

  3. BTW – Remember that if we win on Sunday, we have to play a SECOND championship game on Sunday. I’m thinking way ahead here though, the next game will be a very tough one!

  4. Slight correction: If IU wins at 3:35 Saturday, they play again at 7 p.m. Saturday night. Two wins would mean a championship game on Sunday.

  5. Keep on rollin IU Baseball. Tufts and McCombs pitched very well today. Pheg goin off yet again, Ethan Wilson killed PS pitching, Cox with the granny, had to be a career moment for the kid.

Hot Bats, Solid Pitching = Wins

Congrats to coaching staff and team!!

Looks like the evil Boilers in game 1 tomorrow, bust em up!
