IU soccer fix

For those of you soccer junkies just waiting for Friday night’s opener at Armstrong Stadium against Duke, here’s a few tidbits to pass the time.

  • Head coach Mike Freitag said Monday that he plans to start freshmen Will Bruin and Tommy Meyer. Bruin broke former Hoosier Pat Noonan’s school scoring mark at DeSmet Jesuit High School in St. Louis, while Meyer is the son of former IU standout Keith Meyer and was a member of the United States’ U-17 FIFA World Cup team in 2007.
  • There will be two Sarkodies on the pitch Sunday when the Hoosiers play Akron. Big brother Ofori, an IU sophomore, and little brother Kofi, an Akron freshmen, will square off. Mom is probably hoping for a tie.
  • In Indiana’s two exhibition games, six different players scored. Those goal scorers did not include top returning scorer Brad Ring or Bruin. It’s a promising sign for a team that struggled to find the net for much of 2007.
