A look at St. Joe’s

Tom Pritchard will once again be tested by a player who will probably be getting paid to play basketball a year from now. Saint Joseph’s forward Ahmad Nivins has had a double-double in every game this year and may have shrugged off the inconsistency that slowed him last year.

What IU can learn: Just three games into his career, Pritchard has done more than enough to show that he has the toughness — and willingness — it takes to play against he best in the country. Now, he has got to work to refine his game, and he should be able to made advances in that area against Nivins.

Darrin Govens is a veteran scoring guard, and Garrett Williamson has been recognized for his defensive prowess. Tasheed Carr is the motor for the team.

What IU can learn: Indiana needs someone other than Devan Dumes to drive the ball and create chances, and Verdell Jones shows signs of being that person. But the verve he played with earlier this year has dissipated against stronger competition. Look for him to find ways to gain the lane today.

How they play

The Hawks have shared the ball well and created from every angle. They’re a veteran team, starting two seniors, two juniors and a sophomore but have not responded well to pressure at times.

What IU can learn: Indiana coach Tom Crean made today’s game a referendum on his team’s commitment to communication. The Hoosiers will take some time to scout the Hawks, but mostly will have to adjust as the game goes on because of the quick turnaround. That means the players must talk and feed off each other.
