IU Student Tickets Top 6,000

Indiana University Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Fred Glass, announced today that football season ticket sales among students have eclipsed the 6,000 mark for the first time since 2006.

“We are thrilled that over 6,000 students bought season football tickets this year,” said Glass.  “One of our primary goals was to enhance the gameday atmosphere for the students to encourage them to come to our games, but their commitment and support for our football program has exceeded our most optimistic expectations”.

Glass noted that single-game ticket sales have also been strong, with overall student attendance averaging over 8,200 through the first two games.  Glass believes that student attendance has been encouraged not only by the improved gameday atmosphere and winning play by the team, but also by the $5 gameday student tickets for IU and other college students.

The Department had made $5 gameday ticket sales also available to non-IU college students in an effort to increase attendance among IU students and students from other universities visiting friends who attend Indiana University.  While the department had initially indicated that the “$5 Friend Program” would be available without any limitations, Glass also announced today that the program would not apply to the students of the school Indiana is actually playing on gameday.

“We want to be hospitable,” Glass said, “but we don’t want to be patsies.  Our opponents are welcome, but we won’t be subsidizing their ticket costs.”

What portion of overhead from other expenses is included? If the ‘price’ were lowered, would usage be up? What portion is mark up? What else could purchased for the same dollars? Is the value there? Where is the break even point, both in dollars and attendance? How much ‘cost’ is covered by the high concession prices?
