Lynch: Quiet is good

The silence on the bus told Bill Lynch that his team wasn’t satisfied with a close loss, and that was exactly what he wanted to hear.

Because that meant that Indiana didn’t mistake it’s closer-than-expected loss to Michigan on Saturday for a victory.

“You could tell on the locker room, you could tell on the bus, how quiet it was for five hours on the way home, that it really hurt,” Lynch said Monday night on his radio show. “To me, that’s a good sign. They prepared to win. They went out and it didn’t happen and they felt bad about it.”

Lynch knows that most Indiana fans will view Saturday’s game as a positive, and he doesn’t mind that, but he does hope the Hoosiers don’t buy too much into it.

“I like the attitude that I saw,” Lynch said. “… This team wants to get better. They aren’t looking to make excuses. … There’s going to be a lot of people telling these kids what a great job they did and too bad and all of that. That doesn’t do us any good. We have to get better and get ready for Ohio State. I guarantee you Ohio State doesn’t feel sorry for us.”

Lynch, though, said his team, and especially his coaching staff, felt like it left everything on the field at Ann Arbor. The Hoosiers brought in an option pitch to Tandon Doss, a swinging gate play, and several other new wrinkles they hadn’t used before.

“I thought the offensive staff and defensive staff put together great plans,” Lynch said. “… We went up there and tried to win a football game. We weren’t going to leave anything in the bag and really we didn’t.  … There weren’t any bullets left. We tried them all.”

Highlight of the evening came after the show when Don Fischer played for the assembled crowd a voice mail he got from former IU coach Cam Cameron expressing his displeasure with the controversial interception call at the end of Saturday’s game. Not sure Cameron consented to that becoming a public, on the record statement, so I agreed to seek his permission before printing the transcript, but let’s just say he didn’t pull any punches.
