Wake Forest-IU soccer

It’s all over. A few final corner kicks come up empty and IU loses for the first time on the young season. DEACONS 2, HOOSIERS 1

18:00: A give away by Daniel Kelly in the defensive third allows Wake to go back in front with a cross and header. DEACONS 2, HOOSIERS 1

21:48: We’ve reached the second half TV time out. Indiana nearly had the lead. First, Andy Adlard went down running onto a cross in the box, but was yellow carded for diving. Then the Hoosiers had a 3-on-2 with Will Bruin laying the ball off to Darren Yeagle, who struck the crossbar with his screamer. IU must still be wary of the ever-dangerous Wake counter attack. Cameron Jordan back in at midfield. DEACONS 1, HOOSIERS 1

28:23: Indiana had been building some strong moments of attack, and it finally paid off as Lee Hagedorn slipped a pass to Eric Alexander coming in on the left side of the box and Alexander slotted the ball into the right side of the net for the equalizer. DEACONS 1, HOOSIERS 1

40:25: Darren Yeagle starting this half in place of Cameron Jordan. It seems like coach Mike Freitag is still searching to find the right combination of players to provide a spark early in the season. DEACONS 1, HOOSIERS 0

Indiana coach Mike Freitag was not pleased with the way his team gave the ball away in the offensive third Friday night, and he probably is not impressed so far today. IU just doesn’t seem able to put together those one or two more passes on offense. Both teams are playing five midfielders, so the middle of the pitch has been crowded. That’s why the Hoosiers have been looking to go over the top with some long balls, but really only connected twice, one leading to a corner. Wake leads in shots, 10-9, and in corners, 6-4. DEACONS 1, HOOSIERS 0

22:29: TV time out right now. Really this game has been pretty even, but the difference is just in style of play. The Hoosiers are looking to spring someone deep or build, build, build, while Wake is a team that is extremely dangerous in the offensive third. They do a good job of pushing the numbers up and are really aggressive with give and go runs. We’ll see if IU can get everybody on the same page. Midfielder Andy Adlard has been barking at some of his teammates as they fail to connect on some of these runs. DEACONS 1, HOOSIERS 0

32:50: Wake Forest draws first blood, scoring on a corner kick. The cross was deflected ever so slightly and ricocheted off IU’s Alec Purdue on the back post and in. DEACONS 1, HOOSIERS 0

39:00: Ofori Sarkodie back in the IU starting lineup after missing Friday’s opener for a red card last season. Rich Balchan pushes up to midfield, and the rest of the starters are the same. HOOSIERS 0, DEACONS 0

I’m back at Armstrong Stadium for the finale of the IU Classic today between No. 3 Wake Forest and No. 7 Indiana. In the first game, No. 5 St. John’s beat Notre Dame, 2-0, to make its case for tourney champ. Either the Hoosiers or the Deacons will need to do the same or better. I’ll be back with updates.
