  1. I am really having a hard time getting excited about the game Saturday. My expectations went up after Akron and Michigan. 45 is the high and cloudy, yeah! I will bundle my little ones up and my wife and I will go as always. I think the burgers and brats I am cooking with a few beers will get me through it. I am back to expecting the worst and hoping for the best!!! GO IU!

  2. Think of this as a win-win situation. A true win would give us a little bit of consolation after three progressively more brutal and disheartening losses.
A loss, however, is also a kind of win. Why? Because it will make decisions a lot easier for the men up top. We now have the facilities and stadium to compete with other Big 10 schools. Glass is a difference-maker, and wants to see this program turn a page. After getting waxed by a 1-3 team when we were supposed to be hitting our senior-led stride, a loss to the Big 10’s other bottom feeder would leave little doubt about the health of the program.

  3. Hoosier Football

Set the clocks back to lengthen the fall day,
Cast your hopes of Hoosier bowl games away…
Fill the trick-or-treat basket for the kiddies seeking treats,
The horror’s almost over for the men in gridiron cleats.
Bundle in wool blankets, the air grows cold, the season, chuck it!
As always our consolation prize, found in Old Oaken Bucket…
The fans grow tired as the restless autumn leaves,
As hopeful dreams break free from the same old stubborn trees..
Rake the huge pile of losses, and bag few victories our lovin’
Set the timer to next year, this turkey’s in the oven..
Upon the dormant field shouts the season’s last sarcastic cheer
Not without thanks for all that matters, for IU basketball is near.
The Memorial sky darkens, a wintry sullen sky begins to loom,
Yesteryear’s dark shadows have found their familiar gloom..
In the stands some silly snowflakes drift down in mocking bliss,
The winter has again come early, give pigskin her bedtime kiss.
Put her on the dusty shelf, sing her ‘Dandy Don’ tonight,
The football party’s over, don’t forget turn out the light.

  4. Samantha Pinkerton, sad and lonely
    Stuck in the mindframe
    of “basketball only”

    She hates it when bloggers
    might chance to envision
    a proud university
    that embraces the pigskin

    The ghosts in the banners
    are her only respite
    from lonely contemplation
on an unseasonably cold October night

  5. …”waxed” gave you away…. And of course, the lonely Pollyanna song which speaks more to truth than anything of football to say. As if cloaked in fear that any of these stuffy backwoods blowhards care any more about IU football than you, or I. Why?

    Great poem by the way..

  6. D- This might draw a laugh from you.

    The Associated Press
    LAUSANNE, Switzerland —

Three cities have formally applied to host the 2018 Winter Olympics.

The International Olympic Committee says Munich, the French city of Annecy and the South Korean resort of Pyeongchang submitted their bids by Friday’s deadline.

After an initial evaluation process, the IOC executive board will decide next June which cities to accept as official candidates.

The full IOC will select the 2018 host city at its session in Durban, South Africa, on July 6, 2011.

Munich, which held the 1972 Summer Olympics, aims to become the first city to host both the summer and winter games. Pyeongchang is bidding for the third straight time after narrowly losing out for the 2010 and 2014 Winter Olympics.

  7. I find the poems interesting to say the least. I also have never understood the poster here and there that says, “Is it basketball season yet” as if IU only has a basketball team worth watching. I am an IU sports fan, period! I might complain some about the football coaching staff issues but I sit in the stands with my family and hope for the best. I go to all womens bball games, some volleyball, and soccer. I have been to track and field and field hockey once. I go to cheer for IU! Not knocking the basketball program but how can you get more excited about this years team than this years football team? My dad was taking me to basketball and football games as a kid and I was basketball through and through. I loved football but the IU tradition in basketball owned me. In the last 15 years I have witnessed a 2002 team overachieve and that is it, period! Mike Davis and Sampson were far more an embarrassment than Lynch could ever be to the University! Some of us, some of you live on that past basketball tradition like you WISH the recruits would do. Get over it! Support the football team or else it will suck as bad as it does now 10,20,30 or more years from now! With that said, I am excited about basketball this year as I will have season tickets for the second year in a row. Like Chris Rock would say, Yeah I said it!!! Feel free to chime in, it has been a crappy day for me and could not get any worse!

  8. JPat,
Sorry you are having a bad day. I mean that.
I am reserving comment on Downing. Husky Tom wants to send the finger via this blog. Also, Husky Tom so wants Downing’s approval, why bring up the 2018 Winter Olympics? “Me Like Football” calls people “Stuffy Backwoods Blowhards” while posting something that makes absolutley no sense.
The English professors of America should be proud!

Propose potential options for if/and when IU begins a search for a new football coach and none of them will have anything positive to say. Ask Husky Tom how the Sam Wyche experiment worked out. He has no time for such mundane exercises. Husky Tom called people imbeciles, and generally took everyone to task. When confronted what did the finger sending Husky do, nothing absolutely nothing.
What’s funny is you and I have never met. I don’t know GFDave or Mike P either, but I respect your opinions. Husky Tom, Me Like Football and others don’t respect anyone.
I challenge each of them to name 10 coaches that IU should consider for the football job and declare a winner, them justify their final decision. Oh, they should probably consider financial restraints, age, health and buy-outs.

  9. Jay, good challenge. I would need a while to do that and have a good/solid list. Yes, the lack of respect on this blog has been worse lately than I ever remember. Have a great weekend!

  10. Between Jay, Jimmy, J-Pat, and the other J-names on the blog, I couldn’t remember who the imbeciles were, who the nice guys were, and who the loose cannon loudmouths were. Thanks, Jay, for helping me remember.

I don’t think the failed Sam Wyche experiment invalidates coaching changes categorically. If you buy a TV at Wal Mart for 50 bucks and it breaks, it’s not because TVs are inherently bad. It’s because it’s a cheap TV from Wal Mart.

If you invest 500 bucks in a non-chinese, brand-name TV, however, you have a better chance of having it last a long time.

    Here’s an example:

Washington Huskies record last year under Ty Willingham: 0-12.

One year, one coaching change later: 3-3, with a win over USC, an 8 point loss to LSU, and an overtime loss to Notre Dame on the road. The coach? A first-year former offensive coordinator with zero experience as a head coach.

What I find even more interesting about this example is that the UW athletic department gave Ty 4 years to build something, and he just got worse, even as 5-star recruits poured in. THere were those like Jay who were pushing the argument “No more coaching carousels, we need consistency!”
Consistency brought 2-9, 4-7, 4-9, then 0-12. Looks really, really Lynchiish to me.

As far as your “list” goes, I’ll start by offering two names, then let the people up top who know more than I do, do the rest of the investigating:
    Jon Gruden and Jim Harbaugh.
Any argument that starts with “Those guys would never come to IU” is based entirely on hot air and has no empirical grounding.

  11. Gruden has had his name brought up twice on the radio in the last month. The local media seems to think it is not that far fetched of an idea.

  12. H.T.
    Can’t resist name calling?
Wyche does not invalidate coaching changes, it begs for an answer. Why did he go 3-8?
do you feel that a TV from Wal-Mart is a good analogy?
I never said, nor will I say, that the new coach has to have been a head coach before. Where is your empirical grounding? I personally would not want Gruden. I would welcome Harbaugh. By all reports, Harbaugh has no real plan to leave Stanford. So, you are comfortable with the people up top?
    Try these names:
    K. C. Keeler -Deleware
    Mike London – Richmond
    Bob Hauck – Montana
    Chris Hatcher – Goergia Southern
    Kevin Sumlin – Houston
    Skip Holtz – East Carolina
    Kyle Wittingham – Utah
    Bronco Mendnenhall – BYU

I really don’t understand your need to name call. We don’t have to agree but you don’t seem to be able to handle that.

  15. Jay- I can say some edgy things in here from time to time, but you can too; in fact, I’d like to point out that in our last few interactions, you’ve been the one to incite, not me.

I really have no desire to maintain a long, protracted and bitter back-and-forth with you or anyone. Sometimes I allude to groups of people being “blowhards” or “imbeciles”, but I’d like to think that I don’t call out any individuals, except Aruss.

    Besides, what’s in a name?

I’ve said before that my posts are mostly about football. If you want to talk football, I’ll be happy to. I get passionate, as you’ve seen. I’ll choose my words better when we get into it, if that keeps the peace.

Now, your list seems like a good start. No reason Gruden shouldn’t be there, in my opinion. You’ll have to convince me why a fiery, motivated, young guy with a Super Bowl ring wouldn’t be good here. You can argue that he won with Dungy’s players, but then you’ll have to concede that Lynch’s bowl (loss) two years ago was only because he had Hep’s players.

  16. Paragraph by paragraph:
    1. Your started it. I just tried to call you from under your many disguises.
    2. What gives you the right to call out groups of people or Aruss? You took exception to me, no?
    3. A name is an identity. If you don’t have the courage to stand behind your (one) name, what’s left?
    4. You are passionate, so are others. Should anyone be called an imbecile because their opinion differs from yours?
    5. I don’t like Gruden. It’s that simple.

By the way I am not interested in a long protracted argument with you or anyone.

Pick a name and stick with it. No one is going to make fun of you. Not much! (That’s a joke, in case you haven’t gotten your sense of humor back.)

  17. “my posts are mostly about football”…this is the goal of my posts…I want to be clear and upright with you….Downing’s is the above steely, cross post…bar the few occasions he’s even understandable when blabbering about Eric Gordon…..

I want to round off this discussion to say that my rims are mostly about basketball…spare the rare never-ending obsession I get bent out of shape…hiss hot air like a punctured bald flat tire ..eventually turning into hundreds of stranded posts..never exiting from a thought that can’t stop talking about firing Lynch…

  18. That’s an easy one. Husky Tom

I’ll change the order of things if you so please….Most often move words I nonsensically just like to around. I think I’m drunk.

  19. Jay- I used Bertrand. I told you before, in earnest, that none of the other aliases that you accused me of owning were mine.

If you choose to ignore my sincerity on this point, and insist that I ‘choose one name’, than you deserve whatever name you are called.

And yes, people out there do deserve to be called names sometimes. I bet that you are OK when the conservative talk radio that you listen to makes millions name-calling.

  20. Tom knows all, sees all.
Don’t disagree or beware his wrath.
    Generalizer.
    Stereotyper.
    Disrespecter.
    Immature.
    Emotional.
    Egotist.
    What’s in a name?
    Husky Tom.
    That’s a name.
    There are others.
    Friends.
    Frauds.
    Cowards.
    Those are names.
    Do you like my games?

  21. The wonder of the game is that all can play. Big names are not alone. The secret isn’t. The air is free.

  22. Samantha Pinkerton is another one of his many aliases…It based on a girl he met in Annecy…It’s complicated, but I think they finally separated at some point.. Tom was pretty hurt.. Just to get under his skin she started to talk hoops on the IDS site known as Basketblog. Chris Engel(IDS journalist) helped her come up to speed on Hoosier basketball…Every time she was popping a question on the blog, Engel was all over it..Blogging and Hoosier hoops was a new world for her…She became a huge Eric Gordon fan..Husky’s heart was broken when it was rumored that Sam and Engel were seeing each other(It was obvious by their blog exchanges)…I’ve never met her, but I think she has a Facebook page…
