Thomas: ‘Crean has taken control of the program’

After Kellon Thomas visited Hoosier Hysteria, he said he knew what he was seeing at Indiana.

“Coach (Tom) Crean has taken control of the program,” Thomas said during a phone conversation. “It is going in the right direction and he is taking all the right steps to make Indiana successful.”

Thomas is a sophomore point guard at Southport and recently joined (along with friends Ron Patterson and Jeremy Hollowell) the successful Indiana Elite One program that features South standouts Matt Carlino and Spencer Turner, and IU targets Cody Zeller and Marshall Plumlee.

The 5-foot-11 Thomas has a scholarship offer from Butler, and has been receiving interest from Indiana, Michigan, Iowa, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Wake Forest and Ohio University.

“I am still wide open,” Thomas said. “I am not even close to making a decision yet.”

Thomas came off the bench for Southport last season, but had to face point guards like Bloomington South’s Jordan Hulls and Dee Davis, Bloomington North’s Julian Boatner and Pike’s Marquis Teague during conference play.

“You have to be smarter when you’re playing against better competition,” Thomas said. “It was a big challenge. … I tried to compete and get my name out there last year.”
