Going to the game? Get there early

From Indiana University:

In anticipation of heavy traffic, fans planning to attend Saturday’s IU vs. Purdue football game (3:30 p.m. EST) are advised to arrive at Memorial Stadium as early as possible.

Stadium parking lots will open at 8:00 a.m. Stadium gates will open at 2:00 p.m. Parking permits can be purchased in advance from the IU Athletics Ticket Office (866-IUSPORTS). Parking is $15 per vehicle on game day and $50 for RV/Buses. RV/Buses are to enter via Gate 11.

IU Athletics also announced that four electronic signs will be used for the Purdue game to help direct traffic without parking permits to specific lots where they can pay to park on gameday.

IU Athletics introduced a new traffic plan at the beginning of the 2009 football season. Fans are also asked to review the new traffic plan and plan their route accordingly prior to the game. The new traffic pattern will take effect a minimum of two hours prior to kickoff. Please note: additional auxiliary parking lots will be utilized for the Purdue game. Law enforcement officials may direct vehicles differently than the stated traffic patterns for easier access to auxiliary lots.

Pre-game Traffic Plan
The 2009 football traffic plan calls for a clockwise traffic pattern. Law enforcement officials will turn Fee Lane, 17th Street and Dunn Street into one-way streets surrounding the stadium. The 45/46 Bypass will remain two-way. However, only eastbound traffic will be allowed to enter the gameday traffic pattern. Westbound traffic will be restricted to through traffic.

  • The 45/46 Bypass will remain two-way with two eastbound lanes to the stadium. Westbound traffic traveling between Fee Lane and Dunn St. will not be allowed to enter Stadium lots.
  • Fee Lane will be one-way south from the 45/46 Bypass.
  • 17th Street will be one-way west from Fee Lane to Dunn Street (two lanes).
  • Dunn Street will be one-way north from 17th Street to the 45/46 Bypass (two lanes).
  • 17th Street will be one-way east from N. Walnut Street to Dunn Street.
  • Indiana Avenue will be closed between 13th Street and 17th Street.

Post-game Traffic Plan
The post-game traffic plan will also focus on one-way traffic patterns to allow vehicles quicker access to highways and main thoroughfares. Dunn Street and Fee Lane will both be one-way northbound to the 45/46 Bypass. The 45/46 Bypass will be one-way westbound from Fee Lane to Walnut Street and one-way eastbound from Fee Lane to 17th Street.

A post-game pedestrian crossing area will be created on 17th Street between Fess and Woodlawn Avenues to allow foot traffic to more easily cross from the stadium lots to the grass parking lots. On either side of the pedestrian crossing area, 17th Street will be one-way heading away from the Memorial Stadium.

  • The 45/46 Bypass will be one-way west from Fee Lane to Walnut Street (three lanes).
  • Dunn Street will be one-way north from 17th Street to the 45/46 Bypass (two lanes).
  • Fee Lane will be one-way north from 17th Street to the 45/46 Bypass (two lanes).
  • 17th Street will be one-way west from Fess Avenue to Walnut Street (two lanes).
  • 17th Street will be one-way east from Woodlawn Avenue to Fee Lane (two lanes).

  1. Anybody know about how many seats are available? Will it be a sellout? Are the students gonna be gone for T-day break?

  2. i’ve heard we’re between 40,000 and 45,000 tickets gone…I’m sure we’ll be near capacity for the game. classes are in session until tuesday, technically, but a lot of profs want to skip town early, so they call off.

The traffic situation, both in and out of the game, are a reason that 3:30 is the best start time of them all; plenty of time to get in and plenty of time to get out.
