Tech Wins 70-62…

…but it really shouldn’t have been that close. There was never really a point in this game where George Mason looked like it stood a chance. Georgia Tech’s length was way too much for them, and the inside combination of Derrick Favors and Gani Lawal was as good as advertised. Lawal had 18 points and 14 rebounds and Favors had 18 points on 6-for-6 shooting with most of those buckets being dunks. Mason coach Jim Larranaga said he doesn’t know if his team has ever given up as many dunks as it did in this one.

Mason had absolutely no answers for Tech’s 2-3 zone. Ryan Pearson, the Patriots’ 6-6 power forward and go-to inside scorer, couldn’t do anything against the length of Favors and Lawal. Junior guard Cam Long, the team’s star perimeter player, went 2-for-10 from the field, including 1-for-5 from beyond the 3-point arc. Tech allowed Mason to stay within striking distance, in large part because the Yellow Jackets shot 21-for-37 from the free throw line.
