Update, End of the Eighth Inning

When you don’t have a lot of pitching, you apparently have no mercy. Indiana keeps pouring on runs, driving in three in the eighth to go up 17-8. Shortstop Michael Basil drove in two runs with a single and designated hitter Blake Monar had an RBI single. First baseman Jerrud Sabourin got his fifth hit of the game in the inning, and also scored his fifth run. He has two home runs and four RBIs.

Update, Middle of the eighth inning

Xavier pushed two runners across in the top of the eighth against reliever Casey Smith, making it 14-8. The first was sort of strange. with runners on first and second, designated hitter Ben Thomas singled to center field. second baseman Drew Schmidt stopped at third, but first baseman Daniel Rod kept going and the two were both at third base when the throw was coming in. There was confusion on the cut-off, though, and the ball got all the way through the infield allowing Schmidt to score. Later in the inning, pinch hitter Zac Richard drove in another run on a sacrifice fly.

Update, End of the Seventh Inning

Indiana put five runs on the board in the bottom of the seventh inning to go up 14-6. First baseman Jarrod Sabourin drove in another in with a double. Pinch hitter Blake Monar, a pitcher who suffered an arm injury earlier in the season and has only thrown once so far, ripped a two-run single, then right fielder Michael Early came through with a two-run double but was thrown out trying for third to end the inning.

Update, Middle of the Seventh Inning

Xavier third baseman Patrick Paligraf ripped a two-run double off the wall, scoring shortstop Phil Bauer and catcher Ryan Bellamy in the bottom of the sixth to drive in two runs to cut Indiana’s lead to 9-6.

Update, End of the Sixth Inning

Indiana second baseman Tyler Rogers struck out to leave designated hitter Josh Lyon on third base and catcher Dylan Swift on second. Indiana is still up 9-4.

Moses Abraham and Tom Crean have also left. Abraham left after the top of the sixth with a crew that included Maurice Creek and Bennie Setzer. Crean hung around for a while, and just disappeared.

Update, Middle of the Sixth Inning

Xavier scraped two runs across in the sixth. Third baseman Patrick Paligraf scored on a throwing error on an attempted double play and second baseman Drew Schmidt came home on a double by right fielder Nate Lindgren on a hit over the head of left fielder Alex Dickerson.It’s  still 9-4 Indiana.

And did I mention Moses Abraham was just here?

Update, End of the Fifth Inning

Indiana got two more runs, the first on a home run by Michael Early. The second came on a single by Jerrud Sabourin. Center fielder Brian Lambert was hustling and scored all the way from first base. Indiana is up 9-2.

Update, Middle of the Fifth Inning

After singles by Xavier first baseman Bobby Freking and shortstop Phil Bauer, Jonny Hoffman got left fielder Matt Kleifges to ground into a 5-3 double play to end the inning.


Update, End of the Fourth Inning

Indiana catcher Dylan Swift popped up to end the inning. IU still leads 7-2.


Update, Pitching change, Bottom of the Fourth Inning

Indiana already has four runs on two home runs in the inning and Xavier pulled Markus Kuykendoll for right-hander Seth Wiloughby. IU right fielder crushed a solo home run to left-center field to leadoff the inning, and left fielder Alex Dickerson hit a three-run blast later to make it 7-2 Indiana. Willoughby comes in with runners on first and second and two outs.

Update, Middle of the Fourth Inning

Indiana reliever Jonny Hoffman came through with a 1-2-3 inning, getting Xavier center fielder John McCambridge and second baseman Drew Schmidt to fly out and right fielder Nate Lindgren to ground out to third.


Update, End of the Third Inning

Indiana first baseman Jerrud Sabourin has matched his previous home run output for the season today, crushing his second homer on the first offering from Markus Kykendoll to make it 3-2 IU. Kuykendoll allowed a walk after that, but got the other three Hoosier hitters out.


Update, Middle of Third Inning

Xavier left fielder Matt Klefges nearly gave Jonny Hoffman the double play ball he needed to get out of the bases-loaded jam he inherited, but Klefges beat out the throw from second, allowing Nate Lindgren to score to cut Indiana’s lead to 2-1. The next hitter, catcher Ryan Bellamy, lined a single up the middle to score Ben Thomas to tie the game 2-2. Hoffman got the next hitter, third baseman Patrick Paligraf, to pop up to end the inning, leaving runners at second and third.


Update, Pitching Change, Top of Third Inning

Ethan Wilson hasn’t given up a run yet, but he’s out after 2 1/3 innings for reliever Jonny Hoffman. Hoffman enters to find the bases loaded. Wilson gave up a walk to Xavier right fielder Neil Lindgren and a single to designated hitter Ben Thomas. He struck out first baseman Bobby Freking, who went down looking at a nasty curve, but shortstop Phil Bauer represented Wilson’s third walk in three innings and Tracy Smith made the switch.


Update, End of the Second Inning

Indiana right fielder Michael Early led off the inning with a single and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and a groundout, but was stranded when center fielder Brian Lambert flied out to right to end the inning.


Update, Middle of the Second Inning

Ethan Wilson got out of a one-out bases-loaded jam by getting Xavier center fielder John McCambridge to whiff on an 0-2 curveball and second baseman Drew Schmidt to ground to second base. Xavier shortstop Phil Bauer led off the inning with a double and Wilson walked one batter and hit another before escaping.


Update, End of the First Inning

Indiana left-handers Micah Johnson and Jerrud Sabourin both went opposite field for first-inning home runs to give Indiana a 2-0 lead. Left fielder Alex Dickerson singled and shortstop Michael Basil drew a walk, but both were stranded.


Update, Middle of the First Inning

Indiana pitcher Ethan Wilson got out of the first inning mostly unscathed despite singles by Xavier second baseman Drew Schmidt and designated hitter Ben Thompas. Indiana second baseman Tyler Rogers made a diving catch on a line drive by Xavier center fielder John McCambridge to record the first out and third baseman Micah Johnson made a leaping catch on a line drive by for the second out. A fly out to center field by Xavier first baseman Bobby Freking stranded runners at first and third.
