IU adds fifth verbal for 2011

Zack Shaw, a linebacker from Coshocton (Ohio) High School, verbally committed to Indiana on Friday according to his coach Marty Argenbright.

“He sent me a message yesterday,” Argenbright said. “… We’re very excited for him. We’ve never had a player go to the Big Ten.”

Of course, Argenbright has also never had a player like Shaw. He set school single season school records in both tackles and interceptions as a junior, grabbing eight picks to help Coschocton advance to the Division 4 state semifinals.

Argenbright said Shaw was used as an inside linebacker in Coshocton’s 4-4 system. at 6-4, 218 pounds, he showed the necessary size and athleticism, but Argenbright said his biggest improvement this season was becoming tougher.

“We stuck him in the middle because he’s really good at going sideline to sideline,” Argenbright said. “He really covers the field and gets to the ball really well. But where he’s gotten a lot better is the stuff coming right at him between the tackles.”

According to Argenbright, Shaw had offers from Toledo, Akron, Kent State and Ball State and was starting to receive attention from other Big Ten schools.

  1. Sounds like a Matt Mayberry type player with the skills to make a major impact on the IU defense. BTW – how does anyone make 228 tackles, was this a Pop Warner league? jk

  2. Tom,
Lynch’s redshirt philosophy is you redshirt unless you have a real chance to start. With Willis, Burgess and Nick Turner all available, I doubt they play a true freshman running back. Even Antonio Banks will have a hard time getting on the field.

  3. Nick Turner is a Fresman, he’s been impressive but will likely redshirt too. Shane Covington was moved back to RB to add depth. The only way either of these guys doesn’t redshirt is if Willis gets hurt…..again.
